Forgery ID Location of major difference. (genuine stamp shown) Rod, Here is a comparison of the Mail Coach issue. The first thing I look at is the second curve from the end of the whip. On the forgeries it forms a very circular form compared to the original which is more pointy. There are so many other differences tha I did not bother showing them as a picture, in this case really does say a thousand words. I do have quite a large stock of <a href=http://mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/europe/romania/romania.html>Romania</a> which I have never broken into for sale or trade. If you would like to do some trading let me know I may have something you need. Romania along with Bulgaria and Hungary are my favorite Eastern European countries, but I do find them hard to stomach after 1960.

Thankyou for your very generous offer Antonius, I don't trade, but happy to purchase, if you have something you are willing to part with. I have mint up to the 1990's, the modern mint is very expensive, I let that pass, until they settle down. My main collecting area is now very early Romania, postmarks, Revenues, and the bizarre and abstruse. Fortunately, I do not share your bias, there is not a piece of perforated paper in existence that I dislike enough to refuse, I make no judgements, if it's there, it's collectible, I rejoice in the absolute freedom that offers, life's too short to be discriminating. (Apart from the wallet Thankyou for the 16 Lei forgery information, I first look to see if the Hoof is attached to the harness, I had not noticed the whip curve before. Bjorn Bakken did an in-depth study on this stamp, unfortunately his work is lost, one of the more unfortunate things with the internet. I'll start a thread on Romanian Forgery indentification some time soon, too engrossed in enjoying the forum at the moment to specialise. Your collecting prowess has been exalted on other parts of TSF, and I'll add my kudos here too, well done you. Cheers.

Rod, you say you have mint up til 1990, I'm not sure what that means? Sounds like you are complete mint up to 1990 which I rather doubt. Does it mean you only collect mint thru 1990? Either way it would greatly limit what I might have.

Antonious, confusion by my brevity. I collect ALL Romania, and have mint (lightly hinged) from Circa 1906 till 1990 at least, then a smattering after. I have 15 Albums of Romania, and not all sorted as yet, they are my "Fine Wine" I take a sip, now and then.
Hence I look for early Romania, but am not comfortable as yet in identifying the Bulls Heads etc so it is slow going, and I collect after 1990, when the price is right.
I think that basically sums up my situation.
"Mint" is not obligatory, as I love my postmarks etc. But CTO stuff, I sell off as I get mint lightly hinged to replace.

Rod, Message me your needlist thru 1955 and I'll see what I can come up with. Please if it is in anything but wordpad or notepad convert it into either so that I will be able to read it. A cut and paste should be all you need to do.

OK, shall do, don't hold your breath though, I have to work through my stuff. See, that's why I don't warm to trading, it kinda forces one to focus, I like to fiddle around on the web, and strike randomly. What I am after without looking, is a full set of Essay's (CV around $1000) and the set of "thick toned paper" 1903 Scott 166-177a they are around $400 for mint, hinged is OK. Other than that, I'll email you here, if some holes turn up. Any Revenues, Cinderellas or junky bits, email me immediately with prices. Good forgeries also welcome.

Rod, If I don't show it on my site then count on me not having it. Your collection must be much better than mine so making a list would be a waste of your time.

I see. Havn't looked at your collection yet, Antonius, I look forward to that, not many people collect Romania, I get sideways looks when I bid locally Worldwide though, Romania has a healthy collective audience, on the better stuff, I rarely win. The later stuff, just handled by a collective few on Ebay, and very expensive. I have to make up a want list though, more than once, I have doubled up on an issue.

Yes, you should make a wantlist at least for yourself. I cannot understand how anyone could get far without one unless of course they have a photographic memory. I do actually know a collector with a photographic memory and he has an extensive wantlist. I have spent over a thousand hours making up wantlist for at least 90% of the world that I collect. It was worth every minute and I could not possibly do what I want to without them. Please have a look at my collection so you can see where I am at. mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/europe/romania/romania.htmland here: mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/europe/romania/romaniabob.htmlI probably have 90% of what is shown in dupes. Thinking about bidding on a Vlad sheet this weekend.

Rod I went ahead and bid and won that Prince Vlad sheet. Probably the only thing I will get this week as the pickins are pretty thin, this week, where I go shoppin. It's never hinged and will make a very nice addition to my Romania. For those who do not knpw the item it celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the founding of Bucharest. Issued in Sept 1959 and designated Scott C71. The sheet is engraved and sports one of everbodies favorite bad guys (possibly excluding Romanians), Count Vlad the Imapiler AKA Dracula .
It is a rather difficult piece to come buy and one that you are not likely to find in a collection.

(Apart from the wallet "Rod......I consider that probably 75% of all modern outputs are just that print as many as will sell to dealers then make another set for them, of course little to none will ever be used in the mail system I just do not care for what I consider to be a shabby side to Philately. I have noticed that some appear to collect them just to add to their tally of the number of stamps they have, wow. People collect what they like, for the most part, and I certainly wish them fun doing it. However, if someone asks for my opinion I don't dance around. One thing I learned on the web is that collecting used phone cards is much more popular than stamp collecting, at least in the "top sites" ratings. If I was specializing in a country like Romania I would most certainly include new issues. On the other hand It is rather hard to specialize the whole world. There are many countries that I am expanding to 2000 and also going more specialized in some of the earlier issues of many countries. Eastern Europe (excluding Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and several Russian breakaways), most of South America, dunes, independent African Nations and many Island nations will not be among them. I picked up a lot of Early Romanians on specialized pages last year. Are you familiar with the pages below (a front and backside)? If so can you tell me what numbering system they are using? Scott does not even come close to listing the myriad of variants in the King Carol issues. My pages on these are overstuffed right now and I also have a few stock sheets with other variants, all awaiting additional pages whenever I figure out the layout. <img src=http://mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/romaniapage.jpg>

Hi Antonius, No not familiar with that numbering, It's old It's page 636 I would conclude that it is probably an (old) Schaubek Album page.
Organising your Romania. This is a tough one, you gotta shoot for a target somewhere between "general" and "in depth" If you choose "in depth" probably drop the rest of your stamp collecting. Romania is deep, real deep. I employ Scott to organise the numbers are easily recognisable, used on ebay regularly, up to date pricing, Scott has a CDRom (magnificent) Once I have Scott organised, then I use the Bible, "Catalogul Marcilor postale romanesti" 1974 and back that up with romaniastamps.com. The HUGE difficulty there is translation for us mere mortals.
I use quadrille pages, freeform, so organisation is easy. If you intend to print dedicated pages, good luck, and select general.
Hope that goes someway to assist.

Rod..... Thanks, I'm not interested in plate flaws and fly specking. I'm not going any further than wmks, perf, shades and paper color variations. It's not a high priority as it is presentable the way it is, but I'll get to it sometime.

Rod, if in your travels you happen to find another copy of that Romanian catalogue, please let me know. There's a gap in my bookshelf for a specialized Romanian catalogue. I've found Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, even Azerbaijani (!!! - ok, it's not specialized, just a listing), but I've never seen that Romanian one anywhere.

(If that makes sense I'll warn you, it is overwhelming in its complexity and you have to translate to boot. Anyone whoever translates that catalogue, can achieve sainthood without dying.
