What I collect: Worldwide Stamps, Ephemera and Catalogues

Post by rod222 on Aug 26, 2013 2:40:48 GMT
In a moment of rare inspiration, it just occurred to me I may be able to use 2 Computer monitors. (Yes, I know I am a bit slow) I currently have my computer playing movies to my 60 inch TV monitor, via HDMI cable. I think I have a DVI Port in addition to my monitor port. So I am thinking, TWO monitors, Left Hand Monitor Scott Catalogue, Right hand Monitor My Virtual Stamp Album, How good would that be! I have oodles of 19 inch monitors from a computer auction. Anyone currently using two? any tips, heads up? advice? What are the cutting edge fellows doing? Cheers

What are the cutting edge fellows doing? This gal is using two 22" 1920x1080 monitors, one set portrait and one landscape, at work.

For years I have been using two, especially at the office where I do 3d CAD. At home I use two and like you often hook up to my big TV.

Drop the movies and keep The Stamp Forum on the 60 inch (how big is that in centimeters?).

Hi antoniusra
Just a hint.
I would find a way to store those binders in a vertical position. Laying flat puts a lot of weight on the stamp pages and any mint stamps may become stuck to the album page and/or mount.

I love seeing rooms like that, It kinda makes me feel normal, otherwise, I have times when I think, "What am I doing here?" I just can't seem to resist new stamps. Now I feel OK. I have a long way to catch up to you, and Ryan, but who's counting.

@ antoniusra: I see you have the US Pictorials all framed up there on the right of your right monitor. Have a closeup by chance?

BC Your welcome to come over and do some picking any time you are in the neighborhood Rod Being normal is something I would not like to be called. My desk does not look like that except for the time I took that picture. Everything has it's own place to reside and the desk is kept quite tidy unless I am working on stamps. All of the albums fit into the Fire safes. Jerry I am well aware that it would be better to store books upright but the fire file safes are not tall enough. I have never had any problem with stamps sticking as they are in a dry room. However, I do go thru and check them every once in a while to make sure there are no problems. I.L.S. I'll go you a couple better than just the display card. The set in the frame you spotted are from the 1972 Educard series. It shows my favorite set of stamps in the whole world.#122 being my favorite stamp of all.The second pic is of my Pictoral Proofs. Third pic is my set of the actual stamps. Note my pages for 19th century US are Scott Platinum hingeless. Very hard to come by pages but the best. Attachments:

I have a long way to catch up to you, and Ryan, but who's counting. Rod I have a Grand total of 9 albums. Consists of 3 Lighthouse binders & slipcases (full to the gills and I need a few more actually), the 3 volume Heirloom albums and 2 Harris statesman albums (that I might sell) also another binder of my old vario sheets packed full with modern US stamp panes, 1893-4 Chicago's worlds fair / Columbian Exposition memorabilia and other oddities. that's it. It's all super organized and I have no mess at all. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong?

I.L.S. The page the proofs are on is the Platinum page for the reprints. I don't have any of the reprints but as there are not pages for the proofs it worked nicely. Not much of a way for me to change the heading without trashing the page. I just rescanned that page and did not bother to erase the heading like I did for the one on my site. Of course I uploaded the better scan to the site so I guess I'll have to correct it for "Public Viewing" You were supposed to ask if the 122 at the bottom of the proof page was real. The answer is yes and no, hint it belongs on the page it's on. It was so pretty that I could not resist laying down $25 for it.
Nothing really fantastic there as the proofs can be had rather reasonably, although they have been going up in recent years. There is a lot of room for improvement with the stamps, at least they are all sound. They're just what I could get my hands on never been able to afford any better. I picked up a mint #118 about ten years ago hidden in an Ebay lot of 19th century U.S. Ithink the lot was around $150 and it had lots of other decent stamps. I could not afford to keep the #118 and sold it on Ebay for 1,500 but it did help pay the bills for a few months. Gave up looking for lots like that on Ebay or anything else for that matter. The U.S. proofs will be the last thing I would ever sell.
I think I'll start a thread showing my U.S Proofs but I need to rescan them. I'm still missing many of them but they sure are pretty to look at.

I don't blame you I wouldn't ever sell my proofs either. I'm also very partial to the pictorials. That #115 is notorious for bad centering but yours is really nice! You only paid 25 bux for a #122? Seriously? why can't I find stuff like that? lol
Is that #122 a reprint or maybe a P3 (on India) and perforated?

I've never found any of them to not typically have bad centering. Besides the 118, 120 and 122 I have had many multiples of the others but that is as good as I could come up with. I've always thought the 1 center was the worst for centering. I had to suffer a killer cancel just to get one that was barely clear on all 4 sides. It is perfed and gummed proof. Sadly that is where many of the proofs are going. Crooks trying to fool an unwary collector. This one would fool most but the more advanced collector The 9X1TC below is perhaps my favorite, still need the atamp Found it hiding in another lot from Germany Ebay I'm working on several other countries now so I don't really have time to rescan them all but you can see them at the links below mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/us/usproofs.htmlor here Newspaper in 12th frame mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/us/usbob.htmland here last for frames of Officials mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/us/usofficial.htmlAttachments:

Wow! It's the king of Postmaster provisionals! Is that a color trial proof or is that it's actual color? It looks blue-ish to me? I have never ever seen one in person so I really do not know but I do know that it's a thing of beauty! You know what? I must admit that stole one of your images (at least I think it's your image anyway?) last week...Don't freak out I only used it for wallpaper on my computer because I was totally mesmerized by it and actually thought it was part of Aarago or a museum.

GASP!! I must give credit where credit is due...YOU have an absolutely AMAZING collection..I mean I'm just totally dumbstruck by it. (That explains a lot huh?)
You obviously have a world class collection and seem to share a lot of my collecting interests as well, so don't be too offended if I ask you a billion and 1 questions OK?

Hi Ram, I have 1 x HDMI and 1 x DVI if I recall correctly, not going under the desk right now, too dusty.
I have gotten over the problem by splitting the screen with two windows, I thought it may have been too small for Scott, but I can read it OK (that also prevents desk being overcrowded, or constant neck turning)
Next route, finding a cheap 30 inch computer screen at auction, last one I saw was around $200

Rod,
Before you do purchase the 30 inch screen, make sure of the resolution that your graphics card can drive out of each port. The new screen would still work fine in a lower resolution but double check.

I.L.S. Looks like I forgot to answer your question on the New York Postamster Prov. Yes, it is a Blue trial color proof.
Ram, Thanks much for the Kudos! I started collecting at the age of 8 in 1958. It was not until 25 years ago that I went full tilt. Around 130K and 25 years has put it to where it is now. Of course many thousands of hours also went into it. Fortunately I am still able to find items I need on a weekly basis so it continues to grow. My biggest is problem is that I survive on very limited funds but every extra nickle goes into stamps. BTW.....Welcome to the board!!!
Rod, if I could find a 30" monitor for $200 I would jump on it. I have not seen one near that price, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places.
