A couple of recently acquired First World War soldiers envelopes. Toronto postmark March 17 1915 predates The Special War Revenue Act (War Tax) by 10 days (came into effect March 27) Military Field Postmark underneath has the date obliterated by the Toronto mark, but the code 2X indicates it was sent from the 1st Divisions 2nd Brigade. Red square censor mark. The Toronto mark has a nice CNE (Canadian National Exhibition event cancel. A lot going on here! Cobalt Ont. receiver cancel on back. Also on the back you can make out a 'negative' impression of some handwriting. That is a name and address from another letter, probably transferred from another envelope while they were stacked. It reads Geoffry W. Dixon Box 271 Cobalt Ont. This second cover dated November 2 1916 at Army P.O. 3 has a six sided censor mark. The MR4 Die II war tax stamp was applied at the Ottawa Exchange Office on November 13 Also back canceled in Cobalt. This one also has some interesting marks ENGINEERS & MAPS COBALT ONTARIO.

WW1 numbered field censor marks, like numbered FPO datestamps, also indicate the specfic military units to which the censor stamps were allotted. The square Kennedy and Crabb/FPHS type CM2 censor mark with censor number 2413 was allotted to 15 Canadian Battalion under 2 Infantry Brigade of 1 Canadian Division in Gravenstafel, België, used till Apr 1915. The hexagonal Kennedy and Crabb/FPHS type CM4 censor mark with censor number 1236 was used by 97 Company Army Service Corps under 165 Brigade, used till Nov 7,1916.

What I understand about these covers with Canadian stamps is as follows.
Canadian soldiers in France 1914-1919 were OnActiveService. “0.A.S.” And entitled to free postage on mail home.
To avoid confusion on such mail arriving in Canada ‘ unfranked’ and perhaps charged postage due in error, the Post office applied and cancelled a 2c stamp. The cost was covered by the Post office which was of course a Government department.
No charge to the soldier nor the family recipient .

Late to the response as usual, but thank you for the excellent information nillionaire, regarding the censor marks. I've got a few military covers, first and second WW, but never know how to tackle them as I find specific info like this difficult to track down. Can you tell me what is your source for the censor mark allocations? I've found some in the past but never anything reliable, or consistent. Thanks in advance.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I was looking at my postcards with Queens County, Nova Scotia postmarks and I thought this would be a nice item for this thread. Hopefully I have not already shared it on another thread. This card was sent home from France to family in Port Mouton, Nova Scotia which is a fishing community in my home county of Queens. On Active Service so no stamp required and it passed censors.
