I looked in my collection and found that I do not have ANY stamps. I need to rectify that soon. I have very little from South America in general.
Been too Euro centric I think.

I had to look of the exchange rate == 1 Guyanese dollar equals about 0.5 cents ($0.005) so that $160 stamp is 80 cents US

I looked online at eBay and found a few stamp listing, different values and formats, with and without border, and a nifty complete unexploded booklet.

I have never in all my years of collecting bothered with CV, only use catalogues to organise my collections, have no intention of worrying about values now. As far as Guyana goes, if it says Guyana on it I will collect it.

guyana1230 -can you tell me if Guyana has issued any stamps featuring oranges, tangerines or similar citrus fruit? Nothing that I am aware of, at least not as the main subject. They tend to concentrate more on flowers, especially Orchids, animals and butterflies.

I received these in a group lot of Red Cross issues about a year ago. The notes that came with them stated they were re-value surcharged Kirk essays, 25c on 8c and 25c on 40c, on the 1973 25th Anniversary of the Guyana Red Cross issues. They also stated only 5 of each are known.
Were these surcharged issues ever produced or issued? Who is Kirk? Any information would be appreciated.

Hi, sorry tried to answer this yesterday but my reply wouldn't upload for some reason. These are very interesting stamps, but, not issued by the Guyana P.O. I can only find a "Russell Kirk" who did essays but these are written essays on stuff like "The Romans", nothing to do with stamps. Personally I would keep these as "oddities", possibly someone doing their own surcharges, I have one stamp with 1982 overprint which is clearly been printed on by someone with a rubber stamp or such like, it is the wrong font to be genuine. Your ones do not appear to be the correct type-face or obliterator for the time it is supposed to have been done.

I will just keep them in my collection with the notes that came with them.
Incidentally, the overprints are not rubber-stamped. From the backs of the stamps, it is evident they were clearly applied by either a steel press or steel cylinder sometime after the stamps were produced and gummed. The overprints are impressed into the paper and gum, leaving an embossed relief on the backs of the stamps.

I remember a Venezuelan stamp from about the same time that said "Reclamation de Su Guyana" and a map that incorporated that whole Essequibo area into Venezuela. I don't have the stamp any more so I might have spelled the "Reclamation" wrong. Last time I looked at a map, Guyana was still intact within its long-established borders, but do you know if the border issue is still something people talk about or worry about?

Hi eggdog , Venezuela has been issuing map stamps claiming part of Guyana since 1896, SG 169-173. Including 1930 SG 395-410, 1932 SG 426-449, the Reclamacion De Su Guayana that you mention in 1965, SG 1912-1918. Also, States of Venezuela in 1970, SG 2126-2150.

eggdog Yeah, the Venezuelans still claim that area and in fact there have been border incursions quite frequently especially since oil has been found off the Guyana coastline.
