These beautiful Austrian classic stamps from the 1858-1859 series likely are reprints, as I recall reading about them in a Michel catalogue I no longer have. Printed around 1870, these reprints were listed in 1989 as having a catalogue value of DM 136 (about $80 at the time) which is considerably less than the Scott catalogue I have (2017) which lists the genuine (non-reprints) as cataloging over $10,000. Although they are not marked NEUDRUCK or NACHDRUCK I received them a couple years ago in a very nice collection of Austria which I am still incorporating in my OTHER collection of Austria! Wondering if anyone has any similar reprints from this early Austria series--or knows how they differ?

As Nelson (@falshung) is our resident forgery specialist with particular expertise in Austria here on TSF, I am betting that he will best be able to answer your question!

Determining the Austrian reprints is quite a task. There were some 10 different reprint years. Some reprints are quite rare and valuable. First you have to determine which type the stamp falls into - this requires a very good scan or getting the magnifier out. I would look to some sites that have done a decent job of trying to explain these such as - Austrian ReprintsThis will give you some idea of the task at hand.

Thank you Beryllium Guy and NL1947... I will be checking out the great AustrianPhilately site you mentioned when I get home!
Until I saw this thread I'd nearly forgotten about my early Austria stamps. The beauty and freshness of classic Austrian stamps is a major reason I purchased the collection from a friend of my friend (Hi RJ!) who I am still trying to get to join this forum. RJ is very visual and I'm sure he will eventually post some of his own specialties.....
As I am still combining the new with the old collection--mostly done in stages--I'm probably at Stage One or Two, and I may not finish Stage Three or Four for another couple years. Until then I will post bits here and there.
There are quite a few nice early covers as well, which is where my focus has been more these days!
