I know that their isn't really anything to get excited about but I like the connection to history. I have a few covers as well but I'm not positive where they are at the moment.

I know they aren't in any kind of order. I want them to be but I don't have my catalog anymore. Only the US on disc and a postal guide to US stamps.

Here are the ones I might collect. Also the "Hitler heads" and the Reich's war machines.

I always say I'll collect any stamp for which I have a catalogue, and your group brings up an interesting point (interesting to me, although inscrutable). For some reason I've never understood, there was at one point (is still?) a trend in Germany to collect horizontal pairs of definitives. But only post-WWII, and only before reunification, and only for the smallest sized stamps. Your Heuss medallion pair is listed in the Michel specialized catalogue at 5 Euros, far higher than I would ever expect for such common stamps. For the stamps from the early '50s, this premium for paired definitives can be huge. A used 60pf Heuss I is worth only 80 cent, but a used horizontal pair catalogues at 200 Euro! A used vertical pair? No premium at all. I've never understood the logic behind it, but oh well, people can collect whatever they want, and if a bunch of them want horizontal pairs of smallest sized definitives, then go right ahead. ha ha Ryan

Ryan,
I suspect that the premium (or lack thereof) has to do with the manner in which these issues were distributed. At the time, it was common for the definitives to be available in sheets or rolls. Though the number of stamps produced in sheet form often outnumbered the rolls, the rolls were more common for everyday use. Hence, a premium for used horizontal pairs (which could only come from the sheets) but not for used vertical pairs (which were common because of the rolls).

Any idea why they restricted the listings to only the smallest sized definitives? For example, the technology series with the 40pf Space Shuttle doesn't get listed in horizontal pairs, nor do any of the other definitives which were slightly larger.

I can't say for sure, but it's likely related to which stamps were available in multiple formats versus which ones weren't. The space shuttle stamp was only available in a sheet.

I also like these: (but not the swastikas at least to complete, yet!)
These are sort of interesting as well. Does this symbolism have to due with Hitlers fascination with the occult and use of symbolism at that time? I know that he actually demanded that all books and literature be printed in an old gothic style font and actually sent squads of men on expeditions to different parts of the world in search of relics (like the Holy Grail!) OK enough of me rambling...need coffee now. lol

Germany, Sc1-51 Empire Era, 1872-1900 Arranged on Hagner Stock Sheet
Whatever else I might say here, I need to begin with a big thank you to: Peter ( brightonpete ), Xavier ( hrdoktorx ), Doe , and Mike ( mikeclevenger ), all of whom either traded or outright gave me stamps for this collection. I want to say that a sizeable portion of what is displayed here came from all of you.... so thank you! I am still missing quite a fair number of not-too-expensive stamps for my pre-1930 period. I plan to keep working on those, but I suspect from this point forward that buying mixed lots is going to yield very few keepers anymore. I have learned that just because a stamp has a catalogue value (CV) of only $1.00-2.00, it isn't necessarily easy to find. In some cases where I have the stamp of a particular design at a minimum CV of $0.20, and perhaps even 10-20 copies of that stamp, I don't have a single copy of that same stamp's cousin, which is a look-alike in appearance, but has a different watermark and is valued at $1.00-2.00. Germany, Page 1Row 1: Header (reproduction, but as it appeared in album originally published c.1901-1910) Row 2: Germany, Sc4-5, Sc8, Small Shield Issues (missing Sc1-3, Sc6-7, Sc9-11) Row 3: Germany, Sc15-19, Sc23, Large Shield Issues (missing Sc14, Sc20-22, Sc24-26) Row 4: Germany, Sc28, 9-kr on 9-kr Brown (missing Sc27) Row 5: Germany, Sc29-32, "Pfennige" Definitive Issues (missing Sc33-35) Row 6: Germany, Sc36, 2-mk Brownish Purple Row 7: Germany, Sc37-42, "Pfennig" Definitive Issues Row 8: Germany, Sc45-46, Sc46a, Sc47-51, Definitive Issues

Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing your German collection. I collected Germany for about 15 years between 1980 and 1995. I retired from Volkswagen after 30 years, but during that time I had a lot of opportunities to put a nice German collection together. Sometimes during trips to the factory in Wolfsburg, I'd spend a few hours at the Shops in Berlin. Never enough time, never enough money but terrific memories. I sold off the main collection years ago but have a lot of older used material I'll be listing on eBay eventually.
Seeing your stamps brought back memories of sorting through piles of inflation era stamps and trying to make sense of the lot. I was always fond of their semi-postals, some really exceptional engraving among them for sure.

Thanks for the kind response, Rob ( REL1948), and thanks to everyone for all the "likes".... I woke up to more than 50 hits on my profile this morning. I think that's the most I have ever gotten at one time. Thank you very much, indeed! These posts have been a long time coming.... too long, really. I had set out to organize my accumulation of Germany while were still living in France (2018-2019), and I made my first post of one of my stock sheets back in Aug-2019. But I made a bit of a mess of that, trying to keep both unused and used copies together on the same sheets. For whatever reason, that way of doing things didn't work well for me. I kept getting confused as to which set was which, and it was taking much too long to make changes when I needed to, and I later discovered that some stamps ended up in the wrong places. Then I got the nice big want-list giveaway from Mike ( mikeclevenger), and I knew I needed a better way to organize and display my collection. So I took a cue from Mike, and I decided that when I wanted to keep both unused and used copies of the same stamp, I would make them completely separate. Mike posted about using two separate albums for his, and I now see the wisdom in doing that. It is much easier to keep things straight that way--just treat it like two separate collections. The stock sheets I have displayed in the earlier posts are mainly the unused stamps, where I have them, but used examples in cases where I only have a used one. It means that I still need to do a separate layout for all of the used examples. I will do that at a later time. I will take a bit of a break from Germany now, I think, to do some other countries. Overall, my collection of classic Germany is nothing all that noteworthy, but as a WW collector, I am happy with it. I managed to cobble together some complete sets just from mixtures and trades, which was very satisfying. So, I just wanted to share the results of all my time spent, which was considerable. Thanks, all!

I love your display of these stamps, Chris (Beryllium Guy). Mine looks so blah in comparison. I'll have to re-do mine to look similar to what you have done.
Looks great!, thanks for the inspiration to do better!

Placeholder: I will do proper captions by row and catalogue numbers as time permits, and add them in moving forward. I pick this page in particular Chris due to your layout . Not everyone will be fully aware that many of these issues occur in two different separation formats. Some issues are perforated with the usual punched holes, but also exist, as you show separately rows 4&5 , with zigzag cut rouletted teeth . Particularly when used there can be a tremendous difference in value.

Many thanks for the kind comments, Peter ( brightonpete), Al ( angore), and Darrin ( darkormex). If my posts have helped any of you, then I am very pleased! Thanks, Alex ( vikingeck), for your post and for mentioning the Rosetten issues. Yes indeed, you have spotted the method to my as-yet uncaptioned madness (sorry), as I have separated out the main Perf 14 stamps of this set from the Serrate Roulette 13½ varieties. And thanks for pointing out that despite the similar appearances of the stamps, the catalogue values are indeed different, especially for used examples. On the subject of this set, I need once again to thank the amazing generosity of Mike ( mikeclevenger). It has only been through Mike's kindness that I was finally able to complete both the Perf and Serrate-Roulette sets. As it happens, the 50-billion Mark denomination was the key to completing both sets for me, and Mike gave me a copy of each. Interestingly, the 50-billion Mark perforated variety has a minimum CV in mint-hinged condition ($0.25), but despite that fact, I could never find a single copy in any classic German collections or mixed lots that I bought, even though I have more than 30 copies of other stamps from the same set with the same CV. It gives me the impression that the 50-billion Mark denomination is the most difficult stamp in the set. Anyway, thanks again to Alex for pointing out what has turned out to be the highlight of my modest classic Germany collection, and thanks again to Mike C. for making it possible.

Germany, ScC1-C34 Airmail Stamps, 1919-1930 Arranged on Hagner Stock Sheet
As a post-script to my earlier posts of my finally organized collection of Germany, the next few posts will be the back-of-the-book issues. I don't have enough semi-postals to make a respectable post, so I will skip those for now and start with the airmails. Thanks for help with these go to Xavier ( hrdoktorx ) and Mike ( mikeclevenger ), both of whom contributed to the keepers that have ended up here.
