A few more proofs to add to my collection. The first on the left is a P4 in black on card stock. The one in the centre is a 12TC black on India paper. The block of 4 consists of two varieties of the specimen overprint on card stock. The Unitrade numbers of these would be P13i and P13ii .
hdm1950 What is a P4 described as please? Is it a normal proof or one of the 1890 reprints? I don't have a Unitrade catalogue.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

It was described by Vance Auctions as 'P4, Proof in black on card VF' with a catalogue value of 400.00. I bought it as such well below the CV. It is not even listed in my 2000 Unitrade. I have a 2024 catalogue on order. I took a chance based on my trust in the source. It is probably not wise but I have flown into the Nova Scotia proof and trial colour world a bit blind.

Thanks, but just realised it can't be a 1890 reprint as that was in dark green. Nice proof!

Here are a couple of nice Nova Scotia mint blocks that were awaiting me when I got home from my travels this evening. The one cent black block is never hinged on white paper Unitrade 8A. The ten cent imprint block has 3 never hinged on white paper Unitrade 12. Both blocks are graded VF.

One wonders why the siderographer, chose to place the impressions so close together, leaving so little tolerance for separation perforations. Was it a limit of paper size? Printing plate size? Economy? Doesn't make sense to me.

If you think you've seen the 1860 1 cent Nova Scotia stamp elsewhere then you would be correct. This is because the authorities in South Australia requested the same design and enclosed copies of the stamp with their 1866 requisition to Perkins Bacon. From Perkins Bacon Records by Percey De Worms:

Another new arrival is this trial colour proof block of four. The Unitrade number for the orange colour is 9TCi. Thanks rod222 for the information on how New South Wales ended up using the same stamp image as the Nova Scotia one, two and five cent Queen Victoria 1860-63 issues.

Thanks for your comment, rod222: My opinion is that it would have been mainly to economize by conserving paper. I base that on my knowledge of Cape Triangles, which were laid out by Perkins Bacon in the 1850s and had some very close and also non-uniform margins in between impressions, which is one reason why it is hard to find full-margin copies now. In addition, it was also during the 19th Century that people used to cross-write letters, i.e., writing in one direction and then rotating the page 90 degrees and writing over the top of the original script. Upon reflection, they may have also done that to reduce postage, too. Anyway, it has long been my impression that paper was expensive back then and closely printed images were done that way to conserve. This is just my opinion, and I have no special expertise in this area.

A friend gave me this stamp today. I traded him a tank lighter. (It's a lighter that is shaped like a WWII tank). He thought it was a reprint. I see the tear and shaved side, but the stamp looks authentic to me from my limited knowledge. I know there are some knowledgeable BNA stamp experts on the forum. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

I have 4 used single and 3 on cover and I still struggle determining Unitrade 2 or 3, but I am leaning to 2 on your example.

My Nova Scotia proof and trial colours collection continues to grow with the arrival of this Unitrade 10TCviii. Black is a trial colour and the green SPECIMEN is rather rare.

My newest arrival… Finally have two #10´s on cover. They are not a pair and you can see a difference in size. Back stamped Nov 30 1863 in Yarmouth, NS. Purchased from a seller in Argentina. I would love to know how it ended up there.

Hugh, great resources ... much appreciated.
I didn't so much set out to buy then as they came as a 'freebie'. I got a few nice partial pages of actual NS and NB stamps from one of our club dealers. It included the NS 'specimen' stamps. I didn't really know what to do with them so I turned them into a page and added it to my NS collection. It turned out to be usefu. Last year, I facilitated a 14-week course on 'Stamps and Their Stories', sponsored by our club, at the Kingston Seniors' Association. Various club members did 'guest speaker' presentations each week. I did a lead-off session with an overview of the history of philately. As part of that, it was fun to point out that a manual called 'Forged Stamps: How to Detect Them' was publshed by Thornton Lewis as early as 1863. Philtately and forgery kinda grew up together. We reviewed my NS forgeries during the session and compared them to the originals. I'm looking forward to going into a bit more detail with the Senf connection when we do the program again this year. Thanks, again.

Rainy morning here and reading this thread had me looking at a page I did a few years ago. At the time, based on my reading of BNA Fakes and Forgeries, I assumed they were Fournier facsimilies. I never got any else's opinion. Any thoughts? Hi Hugh, polite comment : Typo Specimen on your page. Fournier forgeries (curved "Specimen" overprints), they have a wrong perforation guage of 10½ Fournier offers them for 1 swiss francs (6 values) in his 1914 price list Also inc info these could have been made by SENF and only sold by fournier exist with bogus violet pmk Other forgeries by Spiro (they bear a New South Wales cancel) never used in NS Oneglia also made forgeries eng and litho Others forgeries exist Bartlett letterhead Source: Klaseboer PS: Liked your album page !
