In looking at an online stamp catalogue they list the following
but I can't find anything describing what the difference between a TYPE BX, BY or a BY3 etc.
I'll have post when I get home in the appropriate forum about how to determine if a stamp which appears to be the same as an eral;ier stamp is identified as to which year? And maybe this question will solve that mystery
Thanks

Do you own a real catalogue (paper or on-line)?. Each one explains its terminology. Good luck !! René

They must have the stamps "typed" elsewhere in the catalog. Scott does the same thing. The "type" number is different from the stamp number. That is so that they don't have to have a multitude of images for everything. Just refer back to the stamp type. The "BX" & "BY" must be displayed in previous pages of that online catalog.

Which online catalogue & which country are you looking at? We can look it up & figure it out once we have a direction to start with.

Without knowing the online catalog that you were using it is difficult to say what those type abbreviations represent.
Typically, stamps that look similar to an earlier issue can be identified through a number of different characteristics such as watermark, perforation type/gauge, paper type, color, design variations, etc. These are usually spelled out in the catalog.

On checking, it looks like stampworld.com...
All that type is to show all other stamps in the same style or set. Just click on the type link & you'll go to another page with "like" stamps. Apparently...

I do have an older Scott catalogue of US stamps (which is my area of interest)
I hope to avoid printed catalogues because once the stamps are ID'd I plan on selling or trading and assuming I'm successful with that I would have no further need for catalogues of world stamps

in this particular two stamps, the only difference is one is Red and one is Rose Red...and the photo of the Rose Red example looks to be B&W photo, same perf, no mention of watermark. I thought maybe the BX, BY, BY3 might shed some light, and the one explanation by several here makes be think BY could indicate "Back year" and BY3 Back Year 3 times...(?) BX has me a bit stumped... in which case , maybe "Type" isn't all that helpful

I ignore the type in that site. That site seems to be crowd-sourced & funded, so you take what you get with it. Odd values for some stamps. I guess some people are looking to make a lot of money off of plain junk.
Not worrying about type in that site is the best way to go, IMHO.

Apparently... yes, now that I've tried that, it does take me to other stamps with the same apparent design (some different colors), although I must admit that although it lets me know that the design was used previously, I'm not seeing any indication regarding how one year differs from one 2 or 3 years later
at least not in this particular case
and I think my idea that BY might mean back Year may be off base ;-)

Real stamp catalogs (world accepted by philatelists) is the way to go and even with a decent Scott, you at times have to consult other catalogs. Spink-Maury for France (for me 2017) etc. Scott Specialized etc. It is not an easy "sport" !! Threads on this subject are to be found on TSF - EXHAUSTIVE LIST of references.... René

René I have looked into printed catalogues, but for me as someone who has no interest in worldwide stamps beyond accurately identifying so i can attempt to sell or trade at a realistic value, many of the catalogues may well have a higher purchase price than the stamps I'm trying to identify. I'm not sure if stamp catalogues have much resale value, but I'm not really interested in that as an option. This to me is a hobby, a pastime and not a sport. I'm not real competitive, I suck at golf and it doesm't matter.... the success of a round of golf is based on net gain/loss of golf balls! Cheers i do appreeciatte your response!

Stampworld.com and all catalogues have their own idea of what a stamps value is. Catalogues are amazing in how expensive they are. I have been buying at auction, and the prices realized there makes me glad I am not in it for an investment. I'm also not happy in that what I have spent I'll probably not get back!
But I am happy now, enjoying the hunt for more, more... more!

I'm not in this to make a profit, I don't want to give away the farm and I'm more concerned abourt what is fair/reasaonable. I know that whatever my collection is worth, my heirs will not follow through with collecting, but simply sell to the highest bidder. I do this be cause I enjoy it (I learn trivia for Jeapordy and such) but most who know me think it's just some geeky thing I do it no matter I still do "it"

stainlessb My suggestion hit the local library and take home a Scott catalog. They also sell older copies when they replace them so ask there if and when they may replace them.
