Hi everyone,
I am currently filling an old Windsor Great Britain album - here it lists the 1d red in plate order, however I also have another album where the original owner had laid the penny reds out in letter sequence - in row and column format as they would have been on the sheet
are there specific benefits in each approach to laying them out? if you were starting out with a blank sheet of paper, how would you do it?

I'd do plate order. I have them in Vario sheets.

My few dozen Penny Reds are also housed in black Vario pages (the eight-row variety). I actually sorted them according to their eye-appeal, in other words the better-centered, nicely-cancelled stamps in the top few rows, with the less aesthetically-pleasing stamps on the lower rows. I do plan to sort them by plate number eventually but this method works for me for now, and it looks pretty nice too!
I also sort some of my Australian KGV (used) issues this way; with the nicer smaller town cancels and legible dates getting top-row billing. It makes looking from left to right, and from the top to the bottom of the page, an exercise in appreciation of the beauty of stamps!
Kind of like hanging pictures or artwork where you can most enjoy seeing it!
To each his/her own!

Hello Lee, I presume you mean the 1858 issue with the plate numbers in the margin. If so the plate 77 has a page all to itself and the rest are in plate number order. If you are interested in plating the earlier issues, I dislike sending anyone to Stampboards, but this thread is useful:- www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=67345I have not yet plated or organised the six stockbook pages of blacks and reds, maybe one day when I have nothing else to do.

I am sorting my penny reds by plate numbers only, still missing about 10-15 plate numbers or so. To arrange them by letters/positions get a bit over the top for my taste, but as Jim says - to each his/her own.
Also have a few penny-reds used abroad Malta, Gibraltar, Jersey etc which are stored as forerunners with those areas, as well as a few forerunners postmarked in Ireland in my Ireland collection.

feebletodix - at first I though you were just being funny, then it occured to me you might be among the few crazy enough to actually have pl. 77 ?!?

blaamand as far as I know there are less than six verified copies in existence and there is debate about the three on a cover. Whilst I admit to being crazy, I do not own one.

feebletodix - Ok thanks, just as expected then! I am aware they are extremely hard to find. Tough there are some fakes, created from plate 177. I didn't want to take the chance to laugh of your supposed album page as being humor just in case you were actually dead serious, which was - well - very unlikely!

I am sorting
1. Plate Number 2. Bottom 2 letters (first) / top two letters 3. Location (Scotland Ireland England etc) 4. Postmark 5. Probability of incomplete postmark strikes ------------------ Rod's catalogue of useless facts.
The Penny reds were cancelled mainly by right handed postal clerks.
In my small study selection thus far, (200) I have found 78% of postmarks lean to Port (Left hand lean, or anticlockwise if you will) indicating a sitting or standing clerk is using his right hand to hold the cancelling device. I'll reassess after my 2000 th.

I have mine in plate number order. If you are collecting each one by sheet sequence then that's by the lower 2 letters & a heck of a lot of single stamps per plate. Good luck.
