OK, don't immediately see a forum for DIY album pages, so I'll drop it here (feel free to move it if I've zigged when I should have zagged).
Since I'm starting the arduous journey of making my own album pages, I'd love to hear some opinions from more experienced collectors here.
Is there a general rule to sizing the boxes that go around the stamps? I know this might just come down to personal preference, but I'd like to hear what others have done.
What I'm wanting is to use is top loading clear mounts, so when I place the stamp in the mount, it should be centered in the mount AND in the printed box. Would I just size the mount to fit the stamp, then simply make the box the same size as the mount?
How do you do it?

Hi Richard In reference to cutting the mount to width see my post thestampforum.boards.net/thread/304/tips-using-stamp-mountsSection 1. Cutting A Mount to Size, b. Mount Width Personally I would make the box for mounting a stamp 1 or 2 mm larger than the mount (height and width). That way the mount would be centered in the box. Jerry B

Jerry - Thank you for your input. That thread will come in handy with this project.
I made a test page with 3 slightly different size boxes. 1st box is what I had originally set the size. My first idea was to make the box slightly smaller than the mount. the mount being clear would allow the box to show through. The 2nd box was made at the same approximate size as the cut mount, and the third was made slightly larger than the mount, as you suggested. After cutting the mount to the size I want and placing it on each of the 3 boxes, I decided that the one box made at the same size as the mount looked better to me.
The smaller box was just too tight around the stamp and the larger box, just looked too big to me and would also mean fewer stamps possible per row. The middle one seemed just right, so that's the first hurdle down.
Now I need to figure out what type/weight of paper I want to print these on.

Hi Richard
I use 50 pound paper. I know others who use lighter and others who use heavier. I found that it was more than adequate for what I mount, stamps and covers on a single page. Also do not go for white, it is too "glaring". The paper I use is sort of antique white.
Just some thoughts that might help.

Jerry - Yes, that helps, thank you. There are no stores in my dinky town that sells stuff like that so I will have to wait until I can get to the BIG city to shop. I agree about the antique white, or something that is "off white". At least it will give me time to solidify my page design before printing.

Hi Steve
I do not know where your dinky town is but if there is a small local printer in town ask him for the paper. In Atlanta I asked at the various office supply stores about paper and I got all sorts of answers. I finally went to a local printer and not only got the paper but I got the paper hole punched and a light quadrille printed on them. With type setting (for the quadrille) and hole punching it turned out cheaper than the office supply store.

I also have to journey to any place. what I am using is what is labeled 110 lb. cardstock. I bought it at a staples store. It came in a 250 count package.I use sheet protectors so I dont punch holes makes working on a page a breeze just slip them out and back without ever opening binder rings.I print quadrille pages at same site as Stiener pages its free.

( off- topic) Isn't Dinkytown just on the north side of the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis? I had a summer working and delivering mail for the Dinkytown (real name) post office when I was a college student.

On my pages, I cut the mount, measure it, and add 4mm to the height and width, so the box sits 2mm away from the mount on each side. That's the ideal size for me. As a general rule, if you like the 2 mm gap, make the boxes 10mm wider and higher than the stamp's actual dimensions. I find when doing that, that more than half of the mounts just fit perfectly, and the others just require minor tweaking.

My "Dinkytown" is half way between "Nowheresville" and "Gobblers Knob". We got a copy store and a small office supply shop, but neither was much good to me. Me and my wife were out shopping today and ran across a Staples, but they didn't have what I was looking for. When i got home I started searching online and ran across a 67 lb, cover weight, paper, in Ivory (acid-free) on Amazon and ordered a ream. 250 sheets will last me literally forever. i believe I used something similar in the past and was happy with it. I should be getting it some time this week. (YAY!)
Also, my firs draft of the album page above was done with Album Easy software, but I wanted to try my hand at Microsoft Word.; It took me about 2 days to basically duplicate the Album Easy page, so I decided to just keep going with that.
I also decided to use the mounts, in strip form, and slice them down the middle, making twice as many top loading mounts. So I had to figure out, exactly what sizes to make the boxes based on what sizes of mounts are available and what I like.
Basically, my boxes will be the same size as the mount I'm cutting. I just like it that way, after trying a couple different ways.
One thing I also did was eliminate a couple boxes from the original page above. I do want shades added, but I want shades that are significantly different enough so that at a glance it is obvious. Some of the shades in Facit seem like splitting hairs, many times over. Not sure if I could tell the difference in some since I will likely need multiple copies for comparison. I just don't want to get bogged down that much. A few different shades is enough.
Things are slowly taking shape.
I still need to figure out how I want to arrange a small website to present the pages.

My "Dinkytown" is half way between "Nowheresville" and "Gobblers Knob". Gobblers Knob, must be US, not in Australia

Well, this just sux! Tried printing an album page and it just came out with streaks and weird stuff all over it. I think the printer finally bit the dust. Cartridge was pretty new too.

Not sure what kind of printer you're using, but check the paper/media settings to make sure they match up to the pages you're using.

Actually, I've been printing on this type of paper for a long time (for things other than album pages). I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with the paper feed tray being broken off recently, and now the ink cartridge carriage is out of whack.

The answer is yes. If you were using Black mounts it would be easier. To get them centered you have to cut the mount to the size you want and then make the box the same size as the mount. If you cut the mount to the same size as a prexsisting space the stamp will be centered low.
Scandinavia is one of the first areas I concentrated on. That said, I pretty much got it as complete as possible (to me), a long time ago. You should collect them all at the same time because Scandi lots very often contain more than one country of the region.

I find this clear mounts always give me an odd look. If you use a black mount, the mount always looks centered. With clear mounts, you see the stamp only. As the stamps shifts in the mount, it doesn't look centered any more and the whole page looks off.
That being said, I love the look of clear mounts. But I am so heavily invested in black mounts, that I don't even want to think about switching.

Not sure what you are looking for Printed Germany pages to put 2016 stamps on would not be out till next year sometime A stamp catalog showing all Germany 2016 - next year The available 2016 catalog is the Michel Rundschau (in German) which comes out monthly and it is not free Moderator might look at moving this request from Germany Stamps to Member Wants?

@album4collect As falschung has said, most album makers won't issue their 2016 pages until sometime in 2017. In the interim, you still have a few options. You can make your own pages using a program such as AlbumEasy, which can be downloaded at no cost from the linked site. You can download free blank pages from Bill Steiner's Stamp Albums Web and, you may also buy his product on that site. Alternatively, you can buy stock sheets from manufacturers such as Vario, Hagner, etc., to keep your stamps in until you find an album or method in which you want to keep your stamps. Once you reach our 14 day/50 quality post requirement, you may post a Want request on the Buy, Sell, Trade board. You haven't yet qualified to post a wanted request so I'm merging this thread into a thread about making album pages on the Do It Yourself board.
