As my soaking and sorting continues I'm finding more and more stamps where I'm sioaking to get the layer or two of hinges off, only to find a hand written (looks to be pencil) and is often the Scott #
Does this detract from value? Is there a way to remove without additional damage to stamp? I saw somewhere on one of the forums mention of using peroxide to remove stains and such- is this a viable option?
or should I just forget about it and sort on?
Thanks
Stanley

Hi stainlessb
Dependent on the stamp issue, it could detract from the value. I have successfully "erased" pencil markings using a plastic eraser, the kind that looks like a pen. In general I don't recommend doing anything and leave it alone. Later, if you find a duplicate with no markings, replace the stamp with markings.
One thing is to be very certain that the marking is not an expertiser's marking.

I hope you don't regret this if expertisers markings are from an expert, why would he/she mark the stamp up...? would that not be like an appraiser of a classic automobile scratching his/her initials into the paint job? Does a chat club require another website/domain? and another login with another password?? Is the meaning of the universe really 47? If one can see the writing on the wall, is it just graffitti? What is the difference between an orange? How does one ever know where "start" is?

Hi Stan An expertiser's mark does not detract from a stamp's value. In fact, depending on the expertiser, it may enhance the stamp's value. As to why they marked the stamp, that's the way it was done and may be done today. I believe a chat club would be outside this forum. Therefore, it would require another web site with associated login procedures. What's wrong with TSF? Ask questions until you are blue in the face In most cases you will not get a single answer but multiple answers and opinions from a group of relatively advanced collectors. Jerry B

stainlessbI brought up a chat "option" not for this Forum. This thread looked like a "chat" at one point. If a member desires this, Messenger (Facebook) is available and free. Thanks Jerry B for your comments and keep posting, Stan !!
