Since I collect these, just wondered if other "stampers" who have them would post some. This is a collection bought from jimjung recently (not arrrived yet). I will add my bit of history to this thread: While the old era of cancels was dying in Canada, and squared circles, fancy cancels, and other antiquated types of devices were about to depart forever, new cancellation devices appeared, among them were the "flags" and machine cancels. These cancels were the subject of a considerable body of litterature, articles and books. These cancels are properly collected on cover. Examples appear in the 6 covers sold by jimjung and am happy to have gotten them. Ref: The evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and......History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp, by RB Winmill. René

Very nice René. It surely makes sense to collect these postmarks on cover, so the entire postmark is visible. Would love to participate, but for now I only have the flag cancels on loose stamps.

What a wally !! I spent ages looking through my Flag albums and other junk to find some covers with Flag cancels. I don't collect covers but knew I had a few somewhere. Then I run off excitedly to find the new thread by renden. Then I run into a brick wall. No thread about Flag cancels ? But he said.......... Then I click on his profile and there I find it.........in Canada !!!!!! Then I put all my covers back in the junk. They are NOT from Canada ! Note to self: Read posts more thoroughly next time. What a wally !

Example of a nice "flag cancelled" cover received with a bunch of covers from jimjung - arrived this morning - chose 2 nice flag cancelled covers of 1899 and a Duplex cancel cover with a 109 stamp (KGV Admiral issue 3 cents) for my friend blaamand, to be shipped in Norway soon. Jon sent me a very nice "box" lately as shown previously !! René

I have a few of these hanging around somewhere. I do not actively collect these days. My copies were gifts when I was once a teenage collector many years ago.

Here is another of the Bickerdike Flag cancels, this one from Montreal.
Wells & Richardson Co., Advertising Cover tied with Canada's Imperial Penny Postage (Scott No. 86) Postmarked January 30, 1899 pm Montreal w/Bickerdike Flag cancel Back receiving markings – Truro, N.S. February 1, 1899
Although this one does not have one, I do see flag cancels with single letters in the lower-left portion of the flag itself, i.e. A, B, D. Does anyone know what the alphabet letter might represent?

I guess this was not what was in mind with the original post , but as the title is not specific to the 1890s issues I venture to include it . It is a 1914-18 WWI piece with the extra surcharge WAR TAX to fund the Allied War effort and the postmark slogan promotes the purchase of Government war bonds The date slug is missing so I cannot state which year , nor do I know if it was general use throughout Canada or just a few specific Cities . Perhaps some one else can assist ?

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50
