My late dad loved "stampless covers"and he usually bought them if they were pertinent to our region and the famous treaty of W- Ashburton which said:
The Webster–Ashburton Treaty, signed August 9, 1842, was a treaty that resolved several border issues between the United States and the British North American colonies (the region that became Canada). My region and it displaced more than 1000 families from Canada to the US - The "English" did not want to fight the US on the border question - very interesting and read through my father's covers.

GB 1822 Wrapper with Two Py Post Unpaid May Fair Cachet to Lincolns Inn It's dirty, but I love the Two Py Post Unpaid covers and I didn't have one for May Fair.

Nice ones zipper ! I cannot figure out the three symbols or letters under the town name BARNARD CASTLE but I don't think it can be " & Co " That doesn't seem correct but I can't figure out what else it is . Could it be a damaged mutilated "PAID"? I guess the large "10" is 10 pennies and based on the distance carried seems a lot for just about 100 miles . Secondly for the next one , If you will permit me to add for those not familiar with London " Lincolns Inn" was and is, the centre where many lawyers had their chambers ....Not a public Hotel or Inn The spelling as two words is intriguing. The original " May Fair" 1686-1764 had become a rowdy scandalous disgrace and was closed down as a public nuisance. Bought by the Duke of Westminster the development in the early 19th century is now the very expensive London Zone of "Mayfair", making the current Duke the wealthiest land owner in UK

I use the title and photos from the listing. Wouldn't have been able to figure out the castle name myself. I, too, wondered about the 'and co'.

Cover to Blackburn with Barnard Castle & co on front? I think it actually reads BARNARDSCASTLE or Barnard's Castle, the old name for the town of Barnard Castle. It seems likely that what is shown beneath is a mileage.

Hi daniel , that’s the answer then I believe . The current distance of Barnard Castle to London GPO which is how rates were calculated Is 255 miles . Allowing for changes in routing and inaccuracies of measurement back in the day Close inspection suggests the three figures below might in fact be “244” Do we have a date anywhere on the reverse or inside zipper ?

Here’s one from 1810 . London to Margate a distance of 75 miles. PAID 1/2d one shilling and two pence . This has to be double rate of 2x7d as the letter describes an “enclosed letter” to be forwarded to a ships captain whose name appears to be Dutch .Nieuwveen. We recently have two very similar threads active in the past week. Admin can they be merged.? this one and. zipper thestampforum.boards.net/post/5874/thread
