Here are a couple of oddities that came in the last lot purchased. What do you guys think about these? The 6d lilac is imperf and the ultramarine stamp is 4d not the usual 2 1/2d. They don't look right to me. Graham

I have seen the “spoof “ 4d somewhere in the distant past but can’t recall what the origin or explanation was. It is a crude imitation of the twopence Ha’penny but why 4d ? it would not fool the post. The purple cancel is not real either.
As to the imperf you may be rightly cautious , is there a hint of two perks on the upper left side?. It is possible someone cut it down by trimming the perfs but it is unusual to have such wide spaces on both sides. Imperfs are known.
The stamp on emblems watermark is genuine enough of course .

Received today a rather nice selection 39 stamps total for #37.99 including shipping. This is amazing considering how Covid has driven the prices up! Many are quite decent stamps. Top row 3rd from left is inverted watermark (which I do not think they were aware of) "666" or maybe it's also inverted and really is "999"! . These were in mounts atop a US Postage Due album page- there's the usual few with noticeable flaws, and several which are so heavily obliterated the plate number is indiscernible. But for under a buck a piece i'm a happy camper! Bottom right 3 penny stars- middle one is really faded- I have just over 400 penny stars now if I ever get around to learning how to plate them and none so faded as this (sunlight??) me thinks the ladies all need a good bath!

as with the inflation of the penny reds, the penny black and blues have also jumped in cost- great for the seller, not so much for the buyer. I'm seeing head-scratching bids on a lot of lots right now, as a result I'm more focused on smaller lots and individual stamps (and trying to get motivated to get some items ready for auction)
still every now and then I get lucky and find a sleeper in the crowd!

I've seen faded stamps before, but this may be the most extreme example. Watermark is easier to see than Ms Vickie! I am getting ready to start attempting to plate my Penny red stars as a take a sabbatical from France and Belgium

Could you collect something easier, like 1960s Ferraris?
As in, nope, I'm no help at all.

Is anyone using the Stanley Gibbons Queen Victoria specialized digital version? IF so, what do you think of it? Are you on a Mac or a Windows computer. i have a 1970 printed version and I'm sure there may well be some additional information 50 years later! Also, the printing is quite small and my eyesight has gotten to th epoint that a hand magnifying glass is a must to avoid quick eye fatigue. I am thinking the digital version allows one to enlarge the fonts and images?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/comments Stan

Penny Red SG 43/44, AH, Plate 146, printed in 1871 -1877, postmark 498 in Manchester, and there are maybe over a hundred different variations for the Manchester barred numeral obliteration- a bit faded and worn around the edges , but for 150 years old, certainly not the worse I've seen

Update**** (see below)Surface printed 2-1/2d Rosy Mauve Anchor watermark Plate 1 SG 138-39, Plate 2 SG 138-140 Plate 3 SG 138-39
SG specialized (8th edition... just got today) provides no detail that I can find as to what distinguishes 138 from 139 and /or 140
I am a bit disappointed!
I search GBPS website with no details revealed....
Below is Plate 1, but is it 138 or 139? It does not have blued paper, so it is neither 138a nor 139a
I received a response from Admin on the GBPS discussion forum and the explanation I received is it was all part of the "Part1" numbering , so each variant was given it's own number 138 is on blued paper (what is now designation a), 139 was on white paper, and 140 was for the Plate # 2 plate lettering error- a hold-over from the 1890s' make as much sense as anything- Now I am curious if the latest SG QV specialized still says the same thing?

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Seeing your post stainlessb sent me to look at my Great Britain collection to see what varieties I had of the 2 1/2 d Victoria. I have not added to my Great Britain collection in years but see I actually have several of these including one of plate 2 that appears mint but may just be lightly cancelled. There is no glue and writing in ink on the back. It would appear that I was just keeping different plate numbers and not looking for other varieties. I thought you would like to see them.

Nice selection of surface printed issues hdm1950 ! The blue 2-1/2d appears to be mint and looks like plate 17 (as best I can zoom in). The rosy-mauve does look like it may have a very light cancel, but still a very very nice stamp

Two 2-1/2 penny Rosy mauve, plate 1 & 2 with anchor watermark SG 138, but (quite coincidentally) the same plate position H O - Plate 1 is Manchester, and plate 2 is Ruardean

Received today One schilling ( far left) SG 211 two shades listed "dull green" and grey'green" SG concise indicates plates 3 - 8, but doesn't indicate how to identify plate # (anybody?) The 3 to the right are ones I already have- I am leaning toward all the same shade... but which one? (the far right stamp has several small tears on the top edge) Postmark on one received today as best I can tell is Dulwich - High St S.E. March 6, 1889 but I can not find anything connected to a post office in Dulwich.

I can't find anything about Plates in my concise although it is a few years old. Nothing in the CW catalogue either. Also I only see Dull Green listed. There is/was a Post Office in Dulwich and a Chief Office in E.Dulwich. There was also an office in Woolwich but the positioning on the cancellation leads me to think the former.

Plates 3-8 are mentioned in the Specialised (8 was never used)
As the numbers would only appear in the mint sheets, it is generally not possible to plate individual stamps. So you can forget that exercise.( certainly impossible with used )
The second point I would make, is to say forget trying to ID shades of Green on USED stamps! The ink is fugitive and any contact with water for soaking will definitely have changed it.
Don't get hung up on shades unless you have mint to compare.

Hi guys I know you are going to laugh when i post this red penny stamp..But here goes I was looking through a box of stamps and came across 42 red penny stamps.
I am no expert on GB stamps. Below was a certificate issued for a plate 77 stamp in 1944. Here is my stamp beside it. Tell me i am not looking at it properly. Robert
