The overcoming of suffering by your own effort is the essence of Buddha´s teaching to me.However,I´m no Buddhist, but an atheist. Both do not exclude each other in my opinion.

Adam´s Peak (2243 m) is often called the "Holy Mountain" of Ceylon/Sri Lanka. On top is an oversized footprint (relief) of Buddha,Shiva,Adam or the apostle Thomas, depending of the faith of pilgrims,Buddhists,Hindus,Muslims or Christians. Usually you climb up in the middle of the night,so that you can watch the sunrise at the top. If you are lucky, the shadow of the mountain can be seen on the clouds deep under the peak. There is a buddhist monastery, where you hang around, waiting for the sunrise and ... shiver. There are many, many pilgrims during the dry season, climbing uphill, most of the way on
staircases, sculptured out of the rock. It is claimed that the ascent brings good Karma.I met there a youngster, who claimed to have made this pilgrimage more than twenty times. So he surely had bolsterd up his Karma considerably.
Adam´s peak is shown more or less prominently on several stamps of Ceylon/Sri Lanka.

Stupas or Dagobas are reliquaries found all over the buddhist world. They contain relics of the Buddha or/and other venerated persons.
In Ceylon (Sri Lanka) there are some, what look close to their original form. Upper three stamps show the Ruvanweli Dagoba in Anuradhapura, capital for more than a thousand years. The Ruvanweli Dagoba was built around 140 B.C. It fell into disrepair over the centuries and was restored in the first half of the 20th century to its current form.Originally it had a hight of 105 m,it now is "just" 55 m high. The lower definitives show the Kiri-Vehera-Dagoba in Polonaruwa, what was the second long-serving capital of Ceylon.
