Queen Victoria Born 24th May 1819I have been awaiting this date for some time now, and sorry for the lateness of this post. It turned out to be a busier day than I thought it would. Also, thanks to René ( renden ) for creating a thread to mark Victoria Day in Canada on 20 May this year, and to Ryan for explaining a bit about the holiday. I had not realized that Canada still marked Victoria's birthday with a holiday, but it is clearly another reason to admire Canada! From Wikipedia: Canada, Sc 50, 1/2-cent black In addition to her achievements as monarch, Victoria also has a special place in the hearts of philatelists, as it is her image that was on the very first postage stamp (Great Britain's iconic "Penny Black"), and many, many more after that. As those of you who have looked back to my original posts on TSF in 2016 will know, my favourite stamps of all time are the Canada QV Jubilee set from 1897. I have always loved the design of the portrait of the young Victoria on the left with her regal image after 60 years on the right. It is one of the greatest classic stamp designs in my opinion, and I never tire of looking at it. But especially not on such a special day. Hail Victoria! Long live the Queen!

A Visit to Kensington Palace Home of VictoriaLate last year, my wife Amy and I spent a weekend in London, and we did a tour of Kensington Palace, Victoria's home during her reign. It was an excellent tour, and we would highly recommend it if you find yourself in London and looking for something to do. Please see below a photo I took of an original portrait painted of Victoria which currently hangs there.

Nice thread ! (I knew something good was coming ) Adding to what Beryllium Guy has said, Queen Victoria not only lived at Kensington Palace but was both born and christened there. I hope to follow up on his suggestion of a visit by going there during this current UK visit. I have not been since Diana passed away. Next, something 'stampy' !

Queen Victoria in her Coronation Robes circa 1837 Painted by Alfred Edward Chalon (1780-1860)This full-length portrait is one of the most famous of Queen Victoria, painted by Swiss artist Alfred Chalon, who was apparently living in London at the time, and became known to Queen Victoria. Although the left-facing side portrait of Victoria used on the Penny Black is the image most often seen of Victoria on stamps, I personally prefer the one from the Chalon portrait, which shows Victoria's beautiful face. The term "Chalon Head" is often used to describe the design of classic stamps which use the head portion of this full-length portrait. Some examples: The Canada 1897 QV Jubilee Set (Sc 50 shown above) uses the Chalon Head taken from the painting for the left-side portrait, combined with the photographic portrait of the great lady done later in life by Alexander Bassano (1829-1913). So, an interesting contrast or juxtaposition of the early portrait taken from a painting, while the later portrait is taken from a photograph. It also speaks to the enormous technological changes over the lifetime and reign of Victoria. Queensland, Sc 76 (5-Shilling) and Sc 83 (1-Pound) also use a Chalon Head design, but in mirror image to the one used in the Canada Jubilee stamps, and showing a bit more of Victoria's torso. The engraving in the Canada Jubilee image is probably the best rendering of the Chalon Head, as most other versions, like these from Queensland, preceded it. I like both versions of the Chalon Head designs very much. If other members know more about the Chalon Head design, I encourage you to post your comments and/or images in this thread.

Many old British Colonies around 1860s used the Chalon head portrait. indeed in the UK if anyone says “ ChalonHead” the immediate image is New Zealand, as that is the nickname for their is stamp series. However it was also used in Tasmania(VanDiemens Land) , New Brunswick, Bahamas, Nova Scotia, Natal, Queensland
incidentally GB has just issued a new set of stamps this month to celebrate Victoria’s reign.
I’ll try to post some pics later.

24th May 1819-2020 Happy 201st Birthday, Queen Victoria! It's time to give this thread a bump. Much to my surprise, it never really took off last year as I had hoped it might. So, as today once again marks Victoria's birthday, and the one-year anniversary of this thread, it seems only right to give this another try. I will make at least one other post to mark today, but I encourage any other interested members to post a favourite piece of Victoria memorabilia today, whether directly stamp-related or not. Below are photos taken during my visit to Kensington Palace in Nov-2018. Long live the Queen!

The Chalon head engraved stamps are most beautiful and best viewed as large as possible and not obstructed by a postmark, which is why I collect mint stamps. Here's my favourite:

We absolutely must have a New Zealand Chalon on this thread, so here is an 1865 cover from my collection. I wonder if, 100 years from now, stamp collectors (yes, philately will survive), will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth's reign the way we currently celebrate all the wonderful stamps from Victoria's time?

I may be mistaken but I think Queen Victoria lived in Kensington up until she became Queen. She then moved to Buckingham Palace early in her reign. After her marriage to Prince Albert David

Happy 202nd Birthday, Queen Victoria! 24th May 2021
It was a tough day back at work for me today, so I apologize to be making this post so late in the day here. I should have done it hours ago to give everyone time to enjoy the day and post something nice. I am glad to know that today marks a great day in history, and for one of my favourite people in history, Her Majesty Queen Victoria! Great Britain, Sc642-644, Complete Set of 3, Stamps-on-Stamps Commemoratives issued to mark the Philympia, London Stamp Exhibition in 1970

Happy 203rd Birthday, Queen Victoria! 24th May 2022I just wanted to take a moment to remember QV today on her birthday. She has been getting her share of attention on TSF recently thanks to all of the Chalon stamp threads. As Alex ( vikingeck ) would say, "Postal history is more than just stamp collecting." I think he is quite right! I recently found this interesting piece, which I think I acquired from Terri ( philatelia ) in a perfin auction lot a year or two ago. What makes this one interesting for me is not so much the perfinned stamp, but rather the postmark, which is 24th May 1900 in London, on this cover which was sent to Cape Town in the Cape Colony, present day Republic of South Africa. As Victoria passed away on 22nd January 1901, this cover was postmarked on her 81st and what turned out to be her last birthday, so a bit of poignant significance there. Hopefully, today can be a day to celebrate the memory of Victoria, and I encourage any members to post a Victoria item in this thread today in her honor.

Being on the go I cannot access my modest archive of Victorian memorabilia, but I feel like joining this wonderful initiative with this modern but always beautiful 2016 issue of the 175th anniversary of the penny red. G S Q

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

At the start of her reign in 1837 postage within Britain could cost a workman’s daily wage, and contact with overseas families emigrating to Canada, Australia New Zealand was so expensive it often just could not happen. By the end of her reign, as is shown by Chris’s Beryllium Guy cover to Cape Town, postage had tumbled within the Empire to just one penny, making letter writing and more regular communication affordable.
