Now I just need to decide what will become my next collecting passion, but I still love looking at these!
Browsing the site tonight, I came accross this beautiful collection of Jubilee stamps. Fantastic set! It's Victoria Day tomorrow in Canada. In fact it's been Victoria Day long weekend for a couple of days now. The summer residents are starting to return to the island -- the ferry line was insane on Friday. The village was hopping yesterday and today. And, I can hear the fireworks up and down the road as people finish their BBQs and enjoy a beautiful evening. I see, in past years, that members have posted well wishes with some of their favourite stamps to celebrate Victoria Day ... Canada's unofficial start to the summer. I'll do the same ... but rather than a penny black, let me submit something a bit more humble. One of our club dealers comes to the meeting twice a month with wonderful treasures ... but also a bankers box full of covers he sells for fifty cents. A couple of months ago, I got this one. It's not a great cover. It's hard to read the cancel, it's not in great shape and there's nothing special about the stamp (although all QV stamps are cool) or the circumstances surrounding it. But, It was sent to Sydney Mines, NS - there is an arrival cancel on the back. My grandfather was one of the younger siblings, born in 1875, of a farming family in Antigonish county Nova Socita. He wasn't gonna get the farm. So, in his early twenties he found his way to the boom town of Sydney Mines and became a coal miner. Initially, he stayed at one of the local hotels and ended up marrying one of the women who worked there. During WW2, two of his sons (one of them my father) and two of his daughters served overseas with the Canadian Forces -- Navy, Army and the RCAF. My grandfather died in 1945. He had a heart attack on his way home from the mine. He was seventy. He worked hard and made a great life for his family. So, even though I was born in Toronto, every time I see this cover, I'm reminded of him and his time in Sydney Mines. Happy Victoria Day everyone.

Many thanks for your nice post, HughI hope you don't mind, but since your post was specifically about Victoria Day, which is linked to her birthday on 24th May (this week), I decided to move it from the Jubilee thread here, to this thread for celebrating her day. This year marks the 205th anniversary of her birth! I will come up with something new to post in the next day or so. Happy Victoria Day to all who celebrate it!
