What I collect: US...everything until I decide what I don't want to collect! And now thanks to a TSF give-away I'm adding Space topicals!

A few weeks ago, I searched for stamp forums in DuckDuckGo, and joined a forum I won't name. Reading various threads there, I noticed a lot of sarcastic interventions by moderators, and decided to bail out before I received the same treatment. I've had a good look around TSF before joining, and it looks like a much friendlier place. This is a GREAT place to be if you are a stamp collector no matter the experience level. You can go up and read my posts in this thread that I posted when I first got here explaining why I was excited to be here. Since then I've had a lot of help with getting back into the hobby. I'm retired from the military and I needed (another) hobby to keep me way busier than I already am. The stamp collecting though seems to keep my attention for some reason. So welcome and I hope you stick around and participate in the discussion forums. I am sure you will learn a lot and have fun! Mike / brookbam

I found this forum while searching for information on US state revenues, specifically for a catalog like Scott. The thread here on State Revenues came up on the search so I checked it out. Glad I found it! I have found a lot of useful information. And thanks to the admin, I ordered a catalog for State Revenues.
Still going through the rest of the threads, so many!!

hi yendiss - there's no shortage of interest here for La Semeuse - by the way, what is it that she is sowing - a cereal of some description, does anyone know - or is the act intended to be symbolic?

What brought me to this forum? I had a stamp question and in my search for an answer I came across this forum which has proven its value in the short time I've been a part of it - many questions answered!

hi yendiss - there's no shortage of interest here for La Semeuse - by the way, what is it that she is sowing - a cereal of some description, does anyone know - or is the act intended to be symbolic? She's not sowing peas or beans, which need to be poked individually into a hole.
She's also not sowing carrots or lettuce, which need to be sprinkled thinly in grooves before being lightly covered.
She's scattering seeds over a wide area, which is what one does with wheat or barley. From wheat or barley one makes bread, the staff of life.
And of course the action is symbolic of the mythology of the French Revolution, which saw itself as sowing the seeds of "liberty, equality and fraternity" throughout the world. The head of Ceres on the first French stamps was associated with the extremely revolutionary Second Republic of 1848, and La Semeuse can be seen as a reference to Ceres.
In 1903, the appearance of La Semeuse on French stamps was a powerful political statement, expressing the triumph of republicanism over those who hoped for a restoration of the monarchy. There's a lot of power in these little scraps of paper!

Hi Peadar Ruadh - sincere thanks for your explanation of the activities of La Semeuse, and inclined to agree with your thoughts that this act of sowing is intended to be seen more as symbolic - a very powerful image.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Having inherited stamps from my husbands father (which I was never interested in) I decided to help hubby and get a bookcase. We then had the task of putting them in and replacing the albums which of some were in a bad state. I then started looking on the internet and found this forum and happy i joined as you are all so knowledgeable and personally I don’t have a clue but looking through the posts I am very very slowly learning a little. By the way hubby does know quite a bit but not as expert as his father. Thank you all

It's a small world, really, so they say. I joined for the sake of exploring a specific thread, then realised this forum is actually pretty active unlike other philatelic forums where nothing much happens.
The exception is SB of course, and still a member over there, but decided to spread my wings across both forums for the sake of those with wisdom to share here who aren't over there. So for me, it's largely about having access to the best of both worlds as I find both very useful and informative. Members here are also very helpful which I appreciate. Thanks, folks!
I do appreciate the wide variety of threads around here and find it fun to browse during the occasional down time to boot.

I was doing some research on one particular stamp and most information I got was from this forum. Since I'm newbie in philately, decided to join - why not give it a try? So far, it's been a pleasure and even though, I was expecting more activity, information I've received from this forum in last two days surpassed my 2 months of online research.

I asked ChatGPT something like 'You just inherited a large collection of stamps, what do you do' and along with a very large response with some good ideas it said: Stamp Collecting Communities and Forums: Join stamp collector groups or online communities (such as Stamporama, StampBoards, or Reddit's StampCollecting forum) to get advice on particular stamps.

Unfortunately Reddit is awash with people asking for the value of low-value stamps, thinking that they've inherited greatness. There isn't all that much in the way of philatelic knowledge. This is where forums like this one excel so much more.
