HUTT RIVERNow known as the Principality of Hutt River, this small (75 sq.km) 'micoronation' 517km of Perth was founded by Leonard George Casley in 1969, following a dispute with the Western Australian Government. It issued its own stamps, including the series featuring reptiles below. My friend and the publisher of A Guide to the Snakes of Papua New Guinea, Philip Willmott-Sharp, received a knighthood from Hutt River Province and was henceforth known as Sir Philip. Ha ha - I like the line "This one-hour documentary was made for eastern states' viewers who are not so well informed about the eccentrics of WA."

Yes forget "Wise men from the East" we have to educate them. Did you know we had a former American President work in Western Australia? Eccentric? a 10c Banknote

I found out about this years ago, and had a 'standing-order account' with them. Once I started losing interest in stamp collecting in the mid 80's I ended that association with them. But a little while ago, I bought up all the ones they had in stock to update my collection. I like to think I helped finance a party or two they have down there!

Being away for a while, I missed the Postmark-of-the-Day thread for these covers, but I'll post them here. I used to collect these until I fell off collecting in the mid 80's. But went back a while ago & noticed most of what I had missed were still for sale. So, for some unknown reason, I dumped a bunch of money down to get what they had on hand. And that included these covers - all 8 of them, each with a $5 stamp. As you can see, they were cancelled commemorating the Perth Stamp & Coin Show, which took place on August 12 & 13, 2016. Why did I buy all 8? sheesh! I didn't bother with the 13th, they are the same as these, except cancelled the next day! At least the were autographed by the one & only, Prince Leonard!

Dateline: August 3rd, 2020
Hutt River Province Principality has formally dissolved as of this date. I was always intrigued by this semi-autonomous region & wanted to visit it. I just never got around to it. Now, once again, it is just a farm in Western Australia!

Dateline: August 3rd, 2020 Hutt River Province Principality has formally dissolved as of this date. Here's an article in The Guardian about this. The coronavirus pandemic has now claimed a "nation" as a victim. Ryan
