tobben63 - do you see the tiny figure '3' ? Plate numbers are inscribed in the left and right ornaments, just like for the 1d reds.

you can safely wash this in warm water with a little liquid soap .The ink, like the other GB line engraved issues,is very stable!

The "3" is actually a little more obvious on the left side. However, the left "3" is also a good example of how a "3" can look like a "8" (which doesn't exist for this stamp).
For this stamp, when there is no plate number, then it is actually plate #1.

I showed the one on the right because the one on the left does look more like an "8"
I do wonder why no Plate 2?
so far, I've only seen Plate 3 for this stamp (although I do not have many, and this one is in the best shape)

I didn't check the exact history for this specific stamp. But usually when a plate number is missing, it is because the plate did not pass inspection, so was never put to press.
