What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

stainlessb, I am impressed by the comprehensive work you're doing with the semeuse. Quite useful to include those images of the different types, well done. I've used to include similar on my pages, and have been pleased looking at the result on a screen. However when I actually print the pages out and get them in the album I have often had the feeling that the illustrations/pictures tend to get a bit heavy on the eye, massive and draw attention from the stamps themselves. So what I have started to do is to reformat the illustrations from being in black and white to grey and white. This way the illustrations doe not appear that heavy. Just something you can consider, obviously a personal preference. Question: Your boxes are quite thick - is the intention to use black mounts to cover them? (and the thick frames to allow for more play when cutting the mounts?)

Stan stainlessb - great work - taking into account the "pertinent" and "interesting" critique/impression given by Jon blaamand, and my experience with the Semeuses lignées and camées, using only 2 catalogs, i.e. Scott and Maury, I also noted the fact that some stamps were difficult to put into a "Type" using the criteria in Maury - Scott is of no help (even with color shades) but most of my stamps are numbered with Scott/Maury and many colors/shades are in named in "french" - I do not reproduce the schematics of Maury on my pages but Jon's idea is excellent. As he mentioned, you do need lots of copies to compare and even with them, doubts will exist in certain situations. All in all, I believe you have many copies of different series which have helped you understand the difficulties in reaching 100% veracity in typing your stamps - I also wish, as a friend of the Semeuses and other classic France stamps to congratulate you on your perseverance. Like Canada's SQs (small queens), I think the challenge here is "eternal".....the more you look at them with various references, the more one can get lost and at times frustrated - the fun of stamping René

blaamand and renden thank you for the words of encouragement and your thought. I have tried gray tone, but in order to keep the images small I have purposely pushed the contrast. The black boxes- exactly more forgiving for black mounts. Early on, my boxes were the same size and I wasted a number of mounts "missing the target" (which would annoy me until I corrected) On some of the denominations that have more Types, I may dedicate one page (opposing) to the details, and the other to the stamps S

You are Welcome, Stan stainlessb - I try to put less "stuff" on pages as they are already in catalog and in my inventory so I have Xcents, Color, Sc #/Maury # and Year of the series - all my scans were deleted so I will scan 1 page later (even though I promised myself not to return to FRANCE......addicting ) René Example of a page done last year and not re-touched yet so it is not a beauty !! and the guillotine not perfect !! getting better now - all other info in my inventory

Just a thought... how about printing the extra pertinent data and pictures showing the types to the facing page. That way the page with the stamps is from & centre and predominant. The facing page on the left has the info if needed. I'd think with so many varieties, that would be how I'd do the pages.

brightonpete Yes, right after I posted the response above, I started eying my page and wondering if that (opposing pages: legend/stamps) might be the better approach. If I take this approach, I need to remember to scale all images tot he same size to make formatting easier, and with the Sower ground under feet, I need to make certain the cropping is to a solid boundary (line) if possibleO as having an unprinted area at the edge make sthe image appear a different size, making alignment problematic. More justification for waiting a day or two before mounting stamps I should have started at a younger age HA!!

Once you see Mystic Heirloom Album, you see the opportunity for a typically blank page.

my lobotomy continues.... France Sower (Yvert 129) 10 c- after several earlier 'attacks" I have opted for opposing pages, Left page for the legend, right page for the stamps- I haven't yet looked down the denominations to see if this is realistic for all, and I suspect there may be some denominations that "share" pages. Also, I will be switching to color printing for the legends page- Below are my (I think) final layouts, although printed in B/W as I'll need to wait to go to the office Modaty to print in color on vellum please speak out if you see something that my eyes/brain now auto pilot right over.... left right i do believe I am stamped out for today!!!?

I can't vouch for any info as I am not ion the least familiar with French stamps, but I like the layout! Looks much cleaner and highlights the stamps much better! That has given me ideas as well!
Thanks, Stan!

Thanks Pete1 I printed some test pages at work Friday on the Ivory/Manilla vellum and the colors looked really good. I need to be 'content" with the results as the Sowers is a rather long and extensive series. While this approach is a bit of work I think it will be worth the effort (then again, I have no idea who I'm putting inall this effort me.... me i suppose... and that's enough!)

Almost done- The first page was set as A4 and the second Letter, so I'll need to reprint page 1 (tomorrow), but aside from a slight scaling issue, this should give the idea. Stamps are markers for now as i need to go through my sorted groups and decide which is best in terms of showing the Type traits and color/nuance. But I now have a template to work from for the continuing denominations if you see anything, please let me know! Page left side Page right side

Got a pretty good start on my next pages- I still need to find some more stamps which show the characteristics of the Types, and this is on white paper. All images will be the same size on this page (what I learned from the last one...) if a glaring error jumps out at you, let me know

All images will be the same size on this page (what I learned from the last one...) if a glaring error jumps out at you, let me know Semeuse lignée starts with a 10c (1903) and is the only series which is "lignée", Stan, so 1st series.... is superfluous. Also it is not described as with ground under feet.....actually there is no ground on the stamps of this lignée series. As for types, you are using another reference than Maury so I cannot comment on these types. Good work ! keep it up !! René

I'm thinking the side frame measurement for I, V & VI might be better served with a single (larger) image and a single text box.
as to II, II & IV I have yet to decide how this applies.... or perhaps they are somewhere outside/in between.... or as I suspect, we default to their variant "descriptors" and ignore measurement. Type II had a very limited "run" July 1903 - December 1904. Type III November 1904 - September 1907, and IV July 1904 to September 1924 - so i would expect to find more of these than any other Type..... with Type II being the most abundant/common (?) and VI being the least common (Type VI July 1923 - December 1924 )the we shall see
let the games begin (and I have more study material coming)
one can never have too much, the bigger the data field, the more representative the results

Although still a work in progress, the RPO cancels on Canada's Imperial Penny Postage have been keeping me on track and out-of-trouble,
Just a bit of fun and it is nice to put context to the cancels that have been struck...
Happy collecting!

I finally finished my Luxembourg pages 1852-1941 today. Printed them even if Jon ( blaamand) and Jens ( barbu) have not approved them yet. Here is the first page with the stamps I have. I don't have any shades, and some of the stamps have relay tight margins, need to be changed.

Agree with tobben (Torbjorn) but since I do not have your reference in hand - I have to make myself an idea - you can quickly modify on a p.r.n. (as whished) basis, Stan stainlessbRené

p.r.n.= au beasoin (fr) - as needed (eng) from the latin and used in old time prescriptions p.r.n.: Abbreviation meaning "when necessary" (from the Latin "pro re nata", for an occasion that has arisen, as circumstances require, as needed).
