djcmh - could you take a pic of your Vario / printed page combo? I’m having difficulty visualizing how you would use the two sided black Vario as an overlay?

djcmh - could you take a pic of your Vario / printed page combo? I’m having difficulty visualizing how you would use the two sided black Vario as an overlay? It's not the black Vario that is the inlay - the stamps go onto 2-sided Vario pages, and in between those are my "Album Keys" as I call them - they are printed on regular printer paper, put into page protectors, then the page protector is put in between two Vario pages Here is a page from 1979-1980 Canada - Vario page on left - the key for that page on the right. Flip the key page to see the key for the next Vario page.

I just checked my supplier here in Canada, and they have Vario pages. But nowhere do they list how many in each package. They give a price of $9.95. Do you have any idea, djcmh ?
EDIT: Wow, additional info gives a weight of 150g! So is that $10 per page? That's crazy & too expensive for me!

Aha! That’s a great idea for those of use who use Hagnar and Vario sheets! I actually do something like that for my Irish perfin collection, but I never thought about doing that for my other collections. I’ve often pondered how I could incorporate information about the issues without sticking slips of paper into the pages. Your solution is much more elegant and definitely better than mounting and remounting Stamps.

Peter I usually buy from dealers on Amazon and usually buy the 25 page dealer packs, which at present are running US$30 to US$35 a pack. $9.95 sounds like a 5 page pack.

When I first started using Vario pages I did the paper slip thing but cutting all those slips was tedious. The inspiration came from seeing an old Gibbons album that had the text identifying stamps on the left pagr, and the stamps themselves on the right. I though that was the solution th having a "printed" album without the cost/hassle of mounting.

Your clever method would be really helpful for me and my flyspeck varieties that require quite a bit of explanatory text. It’s potentially extremely useful for any material that has varieties that are not obvious like watermarks, perfs etc. I’d also like to be able to add in more historical info. Wow - my brain is thinking of myriad ways I could use this idea. This is a game changer for my collections! I owe you a beer! (Or wine, or a good cigar lol)

Got through to the end of 1983 mounted in their Vario pages, found a good number of fluorescence variants and about a half dozen plate flaws working thru my late father's Canada dealer books, though no luck on untagged errors. Have one more night off tonight before back to work so might make a start doing some planning for start of Canada volume 5.

I use a similar concept for tracking spares instead of bit of paper to identify each or just sorting stamps. It is a little hard to see the sheet.

I started thinking about my ASFEC album. Thee process now is to get information that I may want to put on page and also study layouts. The goal was to make maximum use of space on page. I liked the two column of test in parallel columns and then stamps below but if the text is unequal (if I follow a template) then there may be trapped white space. I have thought about eliminating the map. Given the number of pages I may do, I am not in no hurry. this is done in AlbumEasy. The font used in Minion Pro. Looking for ideas.

This is another mock up of my project using a suggestion by Clive to add quadrille pattern. It prints lighter than it looks on my printer. I am still looking for suggestions on layout as I am still not satisfied with the layout of the spaces for the stamps. My idea is 1) to allow space for different sizes and even more than one stamp. The original source is used in this example but still looking at other arrangements at bottom such as one row or maybe create columns at bottom. I had a thought. I may think about getting rid of the map and adding a representative enlarged image in its place. I want to work in the actual name printed on the stamp somewhere if it is not the same as the English spelling. If I did color I would want to switch to white paper.

I had made up a similar design too, but have opted for a simpler approach, like what I have done to so many others in a single-country-per-page (or pages) set-up. I'm not re-doing those to a new design. That's too much work for those and all others to come! I've mostly subscribed to the KISS principle! But what few I have made up will remain as is.

I finaly started at the beginning with France... which woulod seem the logical place to start.... but for whatever reason I just started picking definitives or years to make pages(?) I have been working on the the first Ceres issues (I post pic of it over int he France section), but I decided I needed a 'front page", but wanted it to be simple

I've started creating DIY pages for Sweden. Here's the pages for the first issue of the Ring Type (Ringtyp) as the Swedes calls it, issued 1871 - Perf. 14. As always, I start with the 'Basic set' (major cat numbers) in full-drawn boxes. And some 'playground' below to allow for various curiosities

....and then the fun starts expanding into more specialized stuff - 3 full pages of varieties of shades, papers, printings, as per Facit Special catalog. All those shades and printing-quality differences might be a challenge to identify! Fortunately other Sweden collectors have been kind enough to establish a fabulous website wich is really helpful. So, I took the liberty to use the shades/images from that website and incooperated them onto pages replicating my album pages. The purpose is they will serve as a purpose made / DIY colour chart The first album page of shades/varieties: is replicated into this colour chart:

The above might have been better suited for a thread for 'DIY colour charts' - but didn't find any Guess it's not that common to make such colour charts...but once crazy, always crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Beryllium Guy should create something similar for his speciality, the Cape triangles, some fine day - please do! Stay stampy everyone!

Thanks a lot for that JeffS - it does take quite some time to get it all right - so hopefully I will find sufficient number of shades/varieties in my own stamps to make it worth the effort

I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Beryllium Guy should create something similar for his speciality, the Cape triangles, some fine day - please do! Thanks for your post, Jon.... you are quite right! I think that I will eventually have enough Cape triangle color and print-sharpness varieties that I will end up in a position to create some sort of DIY album page for those who would want to collect them. At the moment, I am arranging the colors/prints in a Hagner stock sheet, and when I think I have a good group of varieties, I will let you know, and perhaps you can help guide me on how to set up a DIY page for them. One of the interesting aspects of this task for Cape triangles is the fact that many of the color and print-sharpness varieties are not listed in the published catalogues. This will mean not only describing each one in an understandable way, but also coming up with some names, particularly for the colors. I have some ideas about those, but I may also post images here on the Forum and ask for opinions. To some extent, we are stuck with the catalogue terms for certain varieties, but I want to keep an open mind about how to approach the project. Great idea from you (of course), so thanks for tagging me!

Sounds like a great plan Chris - I am sure your 'reference collection' will be very helpful for others that are not that familiar with the triangles, me included Would be honoured to be to any assistance if required, off course.

I am getting close to a template. Wikipedia has been standardizing maps and I really like the globe (flat projection would be ok) but since the globe images are contributions not every country has an image. They do not look easy to create. I plan to add a quadrille pattern to the page as shown previously but has been disabled while I bulk add information. The information in the text is somewhat a duplicate of timeline and will try to merge them or ensure they do not have duplicate information. The AlbumEasy source code is up to 8000 lines. Much is just copy/paste a template for each page then fill in country details. # ===================================================================================== # Argentina #======================================================================================= PAGE_START PAGE_VSPACE (-8) PAGE_TEXT_CENTER (BSB 18 "Argentina") PAGE_VSPACE (-2) PAGE_RULE_H (0.3 0 0) PAGE_COLUMN_START (40 0 0 0 0) ROW_START_ES (BA 6 0.1 1.0) STAMP_ADD_IMG (50 50 "argentina_map.png" "" "" "" NO_FRAME) PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_START (BA 11 CENTRE) Region: South America PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_END PAGE_COLUMN_NEXT PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_START (BA 11 LEFT) A republic in southern South America. Independent from Spain in 1816, Argentina was torn by regional separatism through much of the 19th century. This is reflected in the issuing of separate stamps by several Argentine provinces during 1858-80. Large-scale European immigration and investment after the 1880s made Argentina the most economically advanced nation in South America. Since 1930, Argentina has, more often than not, been ruled by authoritarian military regimes. During World War II, the government was sympathetic to the Axis, and after the war, a large number of ex-Nazis found sanctuary in Argentina. In 1946, Juan Domingo Peron was elected president, and he dominated the country's political life until his death in 1974, PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_END PAGE_TEXT_CENTER (BA 10 "First issued stamps in 1858.") blaamand very nice Sweden pages, and kudos for taking up the challenge to make pages based on Facit Special listings. I know any time I have tried to cross-reference Facit listings with Michel or Scott Classic Specialized listings for Colnect it seems like mission impossible with all the minor shade nuances Facit lists
