Hi fellow collectors, enthusiasts and all interested in stamps!
Thank-you for allowing me to join your community.
I am a retired engineer (aircraft engines) now living in Bristol, U.K.
I first started collecting while I was at school, back in the 1960's, when postal items were plentiful and family contacts ensured a good supply of G.B., France and Channel Islands stamps (I was then living in Guernsey).
I left to join a large engineering company and ended up travelling the world as an aircraft engine specialist, living in Kenya, Italy, South Korea and the Middle East. Whilst based in South Korea, I rediscovered my interest in stamp-collecting, mainly because the base where I was working had its own post office.
A spell in the U.A.E. gave me the opportunity to build up a good collection of their stamps, and from there I added Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Once retired I found that there were stamp fairs quite near to where I lived, giving me the opportunity to fill some gaps and especially to meet other like-minded individuals.
My collection now spans G.B., Guernsey/Alderney, Gulf States, Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria.
I hope to make a positive contribution to this forum, thank-you again!

outremer01, Welcome to our Forum! Your membership status has been adjusted and you are now able to post elsewhere on the Forum so please don't be shy. The FAQ board provides a fair amount of info that should prove helpful in answering many of the "how to" questions that you might have. If you run into difficulty, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jon ( blaamand), “outremer” is French for “overseas”, just the same way that “ barbu” is French for “bearded”. Which means that I have no idea what it means, so we will wait for outremer01 to tell us!

Thanks Chris, I knew and that's also what triggered my curiosity. Maybe something to do with all the travelling and staying at places overseas. Cool name I think 😊

Thank-you all for your warm words of welcome!
I am gradually getting used to the structure and processes of this bulletin board, only the third that I have joined.
Having to recall how image-hosting websites worked after the photobucket debacle has been interesting, I have returned to Imgur where I now lodge some of my scans.
The IT side of stamp collecting has been always more than incidental for me. From setting up a database to record my collection, then finding that MS Access is prone to crash when it reaches a certain size, to setting up folders of scans in order to more closely study each stamp, ensures my days are never empty!
I forgot to mention in my introductory message that I have also resumed collecting France, which brings me on to my name - Outremer01. Yes, “overseas” is one meaning, but so is “ultramarine”. The first points to my travels during my career, and blue happens to be my favourite colour. My wife is Lebanese/Armenian and speaks, reads several languages, which helps me a lot.
There are still two stamp shops in Bristol, though I’m not certain for how much longer. Most of my purchases are via the Internet, with a small number of favourite vendors who run their own websites; I have rarely used eBay.
Anyway, thanks again to all for your kind words of greeting, I already feel I am amongst friends!

HI and welcome from NB (North Britain). Additional UK input is welcome ……………… This forum has a decided North American bias! (but none the worse for that I hasten to add in case I offend.)
Now there is another OUTREMER connection which may not be obvious but is certainly worth noting.
During the Crusades of the 13th and 14th centuries to the "Holy land" and Jerusalem, the Eastern Mediterranean lands were known as the LEVANT, but also as OUTREMER as it involved sea crossings from Italy. This area became Lebanon, Palestine and Syria after the WWI carve up of the Ottoman empire in 1920. So the nickname Outremer is very appropriate in that sense also.
