stamps.org/StampShowI am very surprised no one has posted anything about this- it is less than two weeks away now. Will any others be coming? The location was unpopular with some dealers but it's in a great venue and centrally located. Why hasn't there been more interest?

I attend very few stamp shows (has to be more than dealers) unless very close. For what I collect, I can get online so just save the expense (room, transportation, food) for stamps. The exhibits are hit or miss and rarely more than one seminars that would likely appeal to me.

I will be there. Used to live in Omaha and looking forward to seeing how the city has changed and grown. Actually, I began collecting stamps in Omaha in 1964. I think it is a great place.

If it is not too much to ask, I'll be thankfull if someone attending the show would take a couple of photos from the exibit: "Foreign volunteers with the German military in WWII." And post it here. Thank you in advance. Kostia84

Don StampHinger Don, do you remember the Minkus stamp counter at Brandeis? How about the Independant Stamp Company down- I think- on S 14th street; the owner of that store had been there since before WWI!

Hi Stamps1962: Thanks for your reply. Sorry for the delay in responding, but I had to leave the house early this morning and didn't have time to reply then. Yes, I do remember the stamp counter at Brandeis! It probably was where I bought my first stamp collecting supplies, tongs, album, supplements, hinges, (the good Dennison ones) and some stamps too. I also remember with fondness going downtown to one of the newsstands that were out on the street corners and buying Linns and Western Stamp Collector. I don't recall ever being in the Independent Stamp Co., but I collect stamp dealer's covers and I have three from the Independent Stamp Co, at two different locations. I'm posting them below with the hope that this thread's moderator will excuse the unrelated topic. The first has a mute cancel and, unfortunately, the hand stamped corner card does not show a location. The earliest location I have found for Independent Stamp was at 850 S. 23rd St, in 1919, from an ad in Mekeel's Weekly.
The second cover places him farther south and is posted at Burlington Station. I worked in the Burlington Terminal, on south 10th Street in the 1960s. It is one of the places I hope to see when at the Convention. By 1943, Independent Stamp Co was downtown in the WOW Bldg which, I believe, was at 14th & Farnam Streets. If it had a street-level shop, that may be the 14th Street location you remember. What a "bold" hand that dealer had! My hope is to find yet another cover from Independent Stamp in the 1950s or 1960s. Let's try to meet for a short visit at the Convention. I expect to arrive on Thursday and stay through Saturday night. Surely there will be a message board where we could leave contact info, or better yet if you are amiable to getting together, I'll send you my cell phone number via this forum's message system. Perhaps, some other TSF members attending might join us. If there are other TSF members attending, give this thread a post. Don

stamphinger and stamps1962 !! You go, guys! I hope that you will meet up and then send us all some photos and a report from the show. It sounds great. If I were still living in the US, I would certainly have tried to get there myself. I have been to Omaha a couple of times in my life (grew up in Ohio), but it has been some years since the last time. Anyway, enjoy it, and let's have some good reporting from the event! Thanks!

I guess the Independent Stamp Company moved a few times before I came to be aware of it. What I think happened is over time, the owner would just pick up all his stock, move it to a new store location and sit it down in pretty much the same order. I recall going through dusty old boxes with covers dated back before World War I, addressed to him!
That counter at Brandeis was something. I moved here in 1965 and on one of my first visits there ran into a guy I knew from High School in Iowa, working behind the counter. He told me he'd had a rough week, Jacques Minkus had visited his outlet trying to improve things. He said he was glad to see him go, he apparently was a very difficult guy to work for.
I'd be happy to meet at the show. My wife has a cell and after all these years I'm still not proficient with it but ought to be able to use it to contact you. I plan to be there Thursday most of the day, ditto Friday, let me check with her if it;s OK for me to bring the phone then if it is, I ill confirm and we can swap cell numbers.
I am on other boards and hope to meet some folks I know from the Delphi Board. Look forward to meeting!

A bit far for me to travel to.... though I would like to attend a large stamp show- seems I'm always seem to be somewhere else when Sacramento has theirs.... and that holds true for this year... In November i will be in Calgary
Years ago i gave a presentation at the Henry Doorly Zoo- ( a very nice facility... and it had nothing to do with stamps)
I remember Omaha being a nice town, the folks were very warm and welcoming.
And i associate Omaha with a Moby Grape song (we'll see how many get that comment....)

stamps1962;
Looks like we'll have more to talk about than stamps and Omaha! Iowa is my home state as well. I won't be arriving until Friday, but should be in time for a get-together.

Hi stainlessb;
I'm not one who gets it. For me, the Moby Grape song will require an explanation.

Back from the show. Great time! The CHI venue was excellent. Lots of space, good lighting, cool, close to motels and easy to walk to, excellent exhibits. The Boys Town Philatelic Center brought its Stamp Ball for display: Don StampHinger
