I have tried contacting 3 different UK dealers via email on getting a reference collection of Machin paper varieties (POP, PCP, ACP, etc). I have received no responses and hesitant to even try to order something from them without establishing email contact.
Anyone have recommendations?

I used Great Britain Stamps for the pre-decimals order & Stoneham catalogue. I had no issues with them, and will order from them again.

I do have Machins from 2 sources - do not collect - they will leave as soon as I find someone interested - free but it would be gracious to have the shipping paid by the receiver.....should not be a great amount in North A but overseas (outremer)....more $$ René

Rene, I am amazed Ian has not replied, that is totally out of character. I have just emailed him to ask if he can put a set of examples together for you. I've no idea if he can or what it would cost.

Gavin feebletodix , I suggested Ian Billings to angore but he has not indicated whether or not Ian was one of the dealers he contacted. I'd reckon Ian one of the best to contact, he has always had a genuine interest in the Machins unlike some bigger outfits for whom research is too time consuming and whilst the may have the stock they may have less expertise

I received the following reply from Ian, with the advice I suspect most dealers will give. In a couple of weeks there will be an auction in Oxford and I will ask around amongst the locals.
Hello Gavin,
I'm sorry my expertise is really confined to the post-2009 period, with some knowledge of post-2000.
The best your friend can do is to identify individual stamps which only exist in one form and use those as reference samples as far as that is possible. Then use one of the specialist dealers who does go back to 1971 to identify a few other types as cheaply as possible to make a reference group.
Sorry I cant be any more help.
Regards, Ian

Thanks @feeblesdix
I take issue with his comment about the best that could be done. This is why I was approaching specialist dealers to find one that provided specialist dealer service.

Al, from what I have seen of ex-dealer stock they tend to keep the Machins in catalogue order and anticipate the customer asking by reference number. Whilst a few might track paper types as a sub catagory, it is more likely a collectors specialisation and items so described probably come from a collector selling to the dealer. I hope I am wrong and there is someone out there who can help. The dealer behind the local auctions knows a few specialist collectors and I am hoping one of them can advise further. btw the 'handle' is Feebletodix

feebletodix I have not given up but my frustration was not being able to get a response from them through a posted email address or web site response fields. I am not sure if it is on my side or not. Thanks for the help. Maybe I need to find a specialist collector well versed in paper types but still want to get a Deegam since his numbering is popular.

angore, at the auction last Sunday I did not see the irregular attendee who has an interest and I know the other locals have rather a negative view of Machin collectors so am unable to help. I will try and remember to ask when I see him next. jpotx113, there will be a box of Machins coming up for grabs soon from my leftovers, get posting

feebletodixI did connect with a contact at Deegaem Publications and they just recommended identifying unique samples and do it on my own. I may have to just try to buy something to make a better connection.
