Like your other newest member, rjan55, I too am a collector from Long Island in New York. My interest in stamp collecting started when my elementary school had a "hobby day" demonstration in which the teachers were invited to show off or display their personal hobbies or interests. My 6th grade teacher brought in his US plate block stamp collection and I have been hooked ever since - for over 45 years now. In retrospect, it was pretty brave of him to show off this collection to a bunch of elementary school children, considering he had some old and valuable plate blocks, including airmails and pre-1900. I remember the collection included a full set of Zepps in blocks of 6, but unfortunately for him, not plate blocks.
My primary collecting interests of late have been focused on worldwide topicals - UPU, Red Cross, IYC, WRY, and the U.S. Bicentennial. Other collections I have been working on are major International Stamp Exhibitions and U.S. Exhibitions. In fact, I found The Stamp Forum while looking for information about some exhibition cinderellas I have. After perusing some of the threads, I knew this was the right place to be.
Other major collecting interests I have are souvenir cards and security printing proofs and ephemera. Additionally, my country collections are: U.S. (all facets), France, and Germany.
I look forward to contributing to and participating in discussions within the various forums.

Welcome de61! Great story as to how you got into stamp collecting. Have you ever considered doing the same and sharing your collection with a school group?

Great story as to how you got into stamp collecting. Have you ever considered doing the same and sharing your collection with a school group? Great question, Stanley. I had not considered displaying any part of my collection with a school group. Years ago, I showed part of my collection at the local library, but only felt comfortable bringing things like Postal Commemorative Society "World of Stamps" collections. If those got lost, stolen, or damaged, I would not be upset. The local library probably still provides the most reasonable venue for displaying a collection.
Showing the stamp collection in a school is probably not a realistic possibility. Most school classes today operate on such tight schedules, they cannot vary from their planned curricula to allow for a special event.
Nowadays, security is also tight, so bringing anything into a school or taking something out of a school is difficult. Before I retired, I regularly represented local government in meetings with school officials to discuss site design, safety, security, and traffic issues regarding their schools. Even though I was usually meeting with school superintendents and school board members, I still had to pass a security review and have my briefcase checked before I could enter a school.
