Beacon House a townhouse built long ago....? not much else about this I can find about this The piece below intrigues me, mainly as to what was in the oval Rich Hinckley Esquire? ? and the penny red remained...... (very strange) I do not know if the postmark (sideways barred oval . diamond 3) is correct (meaning maybe this has been tampered with) But, dates stamps on the back July 10, 1847 from (?) BC (?) to Lichfield July 11, 1847 (?) here's the entire back dice weband here's a close up of the seal (looks like as unicorn to me!?! what ye think??

If I was to wager, I'd bet that this was what had been cut out from the cover.

I wondered if it might have been postal stationary, but it was removed with such care so as to not disturber the penny red
maybe the postmaster missed it with the cancellation so it was removed to be used again (?)

Interesting that Steve found a penny pink embossed stationery stamp with the same London cancel as the penny red.
I cannot speculate why the original was cut out ( you can still see a trace of the pink oval at the edge of the hole ) one penny would have been enough postage so the envelope did not need an extra stamp unless it was a heavy letter rated 2 pence .
However it would have been ok then to stick the stationery stamp on to another letter if the post office had only cancelled the adhesive and not the embossed.
The old Beacon House was refurbished and extended in 1837 when newly married lawyer Richard Hinckley moves in . It was previously known as beacon Place and was demolished in 1960s for new housing
