COB is very helpful and your French will improve if you do not already speak and read it! COB seems to be the most thorough on Types, variants and shades...although shades is something you have to sort of figure out on your own. there is a thread elsewhere where we've come up with some academically interesting approaches... although interpretation still seems better left to comparing by eye since scanners and monitors vary with respect to color rendition/recognition/resolution

Thanks stainlessb - I was born in Belgium near Antwerp and my French is fairly good, so I should manage!

These arrived today. unsure which color shades these are (there are 9)... these are my only ones I also think that I have mis-named my files as #MO1 instead of #1 (#MO1 has the horizontal red line???) A beautiful cancel #4 is I believe Aubange cancellation is not identifiable, but color shade is different only 7 to go.....

A sort of cancellation in red pen-ink done by Jean-Baptiste MOENS, a stamptrader that bought some sheets of early stamps after they were taken out of order in 1866, to devalue them for use. The number 4 here on your stamp is from ANVERS (Antwerp). It has horizontal bars. Vertical bars n°4 is indeed Aubange. Color on second one is probably greybrown or blackbrown, but you would need a lot of them to compare colors... The first one is pretty broad on the bottom side, could have been on the very bottom side of the sheet (leaf edge)

I must say I really appreciate your knowledge on Belgian philately @bjornbwlgium. Much of it is thanks to an elaborate Belgian official stamp catalogue , they really put in some effort to keep adding interesting stuff in there!

I jus got the 2023 Netherlands NVP catalogue Will, it is the regular Belgian Catalog, the so called COB - OBP, but it has a lot of details on the stamps. I don't really know of an elaborate one-piece specialized catalog for belgium that could tell much more than the COB does... I have a book on early cancellations and will soon buy the one on the preo's.

Can you post or PM me a link to a shop that sell COB and can send it to Norway?
Norfrim (Denmark) don't have it but I might ask if they could get it.

The Balasse books give even more info on the original Leopold I stamps - the entire 1st volume of the 3 volumes is given over to the early epaulettes and medallions. I have a copy but they are rare to find in good condition, and I still haven't sat down and read it properly...
