Hello, my name is Dan, I live in the Thousand Islands region of New York State, on the St. Lawrence River. I am looking forward to meeting the folks of this forum. My grandfather introduced me to stamp collecting when I was about ten. I was always impressed with his collection, which was all about space, an offshoot of his connection to NASA and the Apollo program when he worked for GE. I haven't been active in a number of years, and for some reason pulled my album out the other day and the interest has rekindled. My album was last updated about 1985, so I have a lot of catching up to do. Poking around for supplements, etc., led me to this site and to others, where I learned about the possibility of printing up my own albums. My interests are in US and other countries I have visited, such as Costa Rica, and topicals including natural history (especially birds) and canoes. I am a collector at heart, much to my wife's dismay. In addition to stamps I also collect cameras, and ephemera related to wooden canoe manufacturing in North America, including trade catalogs, photographs, and glass plate negatives. Since I have twenty-two at the moment, I guess I should admit that I collect wooden canoes as well. When I am not busy collecting, I run a coffee roastery in Cape Vincent, New York, and am editor of a magazine for the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association and a newsletter for the Early American Industries Association. I also enjoy woodworking (including timberframing) and leatherworking. Below is my very first FDC, which arrived at my house just a few days before my tenth birthday. I promise that after the second, I learned about removable address labels! Regards, Dan

Welcome to the forum, Dan! I recently took up my collection again, after a nearly 10 year hiatus. I also collect cameras (and too many other things, according to my wife). As for canoes I will leave those to you; after my third year canoeing the Buffalo River I bought a 12' kayak and learned from my mistakes!

to the forum, Dan! I lost interest in collecting in 1985 as well. But started back up a couple years ago. A museum I have been meaning to visit is the Canoe Museum in Peterborough. One of these days, I'll make it. And if I ever get my passport, I'll be sure to pick up some of your coffee. I've been called a coffee snob, but I do like coffee! Lots of good people & info here. Glad you joined!

Hi Dan to a great Forum. Do I understand that these are "real" usable canoes? If so, and full size, where do you store them?
I come from Bangor, Maine which is close to Old Town (about 13 miles). I don't know if they are considered wooden, but, if real canoes, do you have a Old Town Maine Guide? It was fascinating to see how fast these canoes were put together.

Hi Jerry, Yes, they are the real thing, they range in age from circa 1882 to one I am currently building. Let's just say that storage is a huge issue! I don't have an Old Town Guide, but have other similar ones. While building a canvas canoe today is considered an art, back in the day it was assembly line production, not much different than building a Model T. Dan

By the way, is this the same 'Thousand Island' the famous salad dressing is named after ? Yes, indeed. There is a lot of competition in the area as to who has the "original" recipe.

Hi Dan
Covering the canoe was Yankee ingenuity at its best. They would hang the canvas by the 4 corners, wet the canvas and place the canoe in the cradle. They would then put rocks in the canoe, thus putting a load on the canvas and stretching the canvas. The canvas was then attached to the woodwork. These 15 foot Maine Guides were heavy, as anyone portaging one could tell you. Ultra stable canoe as they were flat bottomed. Since Old Town was the tribal center for the Penobscot Indian Nation, the canoes were actually made by Penobscots. Today its fiberglass, although, I believe, you can still buy an "original". I saw an ad for a wooden Guide, custom built, for about $8,000. However, the web site said they aren't being sold anymore?
Used to go camping on Lake George Islands. The outfitter had Maine Guides only.

Welcome! Canoe, eh? Who is Ivan Patzaichin? Had to google him (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Patzaichin). My specialty is the history of North American recreational canoeing, especially manufacturing of wood canoes. Not so much racing, though I'm willing to learn!
