So here is another early Ottawa printing but with a slightly lighter shade with less orange. But it has the same white paper and the same clear design.

I spent much of yesterday sorting through boxes and stock-books of Canada Small Queens trying to make sense of a neglected accumulation. I came up with the following pages of stamps that will have to be sorted and identified at some point in the future. I hope my eyesight holds up. Is it a # 37 or a 41? Montreal or Ottawa, Thin or thick paper, oh yes and what color is it? Thankfully I have good tools and references to help but it takes a lot of time. A lot. Time will tell if I ever get to them, my interests have been more in French colonial Africa of late. Rob

For Small Queen color identification, I rely pretty heavily on: "A Basic Color Guide System for The Large and Small Queens, The Widows Weeds, Registered Letter Stamps, Postcards (engraved), of Canada 1869-1897 by Richard M. Morris". It has actual color chips (in all of the listed catalogue shades) laid onto the page for each stamp so there aren't any irregularities that can result from the colors being merely printed. I highly recommend this book if you can find one, It took me a long time to find this one and I paid DEARLY. It was out of print when I found this copy, hopefully, it goes back into print. It's a labor intensive reference to manufacture considering the numerous color chips that are laid into each identification page. Rob

Hi Robert,
Thank you for the suggestion but I'm already a member of BNAPS and its Small Queen Study Group. It's a great suggestion though for anyone interested in this segment of Canada philately. The level of expertise is staggering, a few of the members can accurately identify a variety after just a short while. I'm nowhere near that level but I can find my way using my color guides and flowcharts.
BNAPS is Ground Zero for this kind of information, besides the current members, there's a lot of historical information on tap from past members and earlier studies. One can become as involved with this topic as time and money allow...
Sincerely,
Rob

Thank you Robert, I'm not familiar with that chart but I certainly appreciate it. I typically use a "Kiusalas Gauge" or my scanner software from SoftPro: EZPerf for sorting perforations.
I was much more involved in the Small Queens awhile back but with age and diminishing eyesight, I'm doing less close work with specific stamps and enjoying more general collecting and mounting.

Canada Number 35 1 cent yellow.
More "Small Queens" to identify from yesterdays sorting. This is a nice appearing group covering all of the shades and types from Ottawa to Montreal and back to Ottawa. Perforations on these can be tricky. Job security..... Rob

Hi Jeff,
That would be quite a collection. I played with square circle cancels for a short while, too hard to find and even harder to find nice looking cancels (and I'm talking about the more common lower values). I'm impressed.

It is also hard to distinguish between thickness of SQ/stamps/etc. A few years ago i designed a box that was made to register frequency readings. I took a normal know thickness stamp and ran it trough my AUDACITY program. The box was insulated from outside sound...it had a microphone and a sound receiver.
Now i had a reference to which to get thin/normal/thick paper. Below is a copy of that frequency.
I drew a very, very quick drawing of the device.
Have not had time to complete this device..Hopefully some day.

Just giving this thread a bump to call to everyone's attention to the fact that I have renamed it to make it a bit more general than the original title did, and to mention that I moved 10 posts over from the Whatcha Been Stamping? thread, mostly by Rob ( REL1948 ) and Robert ( WERT ), that had some really nice images and good reference information, that I felt belonged in a subject-specific thread, where it could be more easily found. Enjoy the revamped thread, and stay stampy, all!

You don't see such stamps on offer in France very often, so when it showed up in this month's auction, I had to bid (high). This is the 6c small QV issue, perf. 11.5x12, MH, Sc#39b:

Fascinating stuff! I just checked BNAP and find you need a sponsor. Anyone care to risk their reputation on me? Also, I see that the site asks if you've ever been banned from a philatelic site. I have been banned from the Postage Stamp Chat Board by the founder, Glen Stephens, for calling him out on his downright nasty and abusive responses to some on my posts. Honestly, I'd do it again. I hope that doesn't prevent me from joining BNAP. f you are under the age of 18, you must provide the name of an adult BNAPS member to act as sponsor and financial guarantor. If you are under 18, please provide the following information: (from BNAPS site) If not under 18, no need for a sponsor - FYI only

Got a small lot of Small Queens in the mail yesterday, and it's driving home how much I need a scanner to properly document these things for identification! Here's a photo of the lot, I struggle with the colors (really need a color guide!) a little, but it looks like 4 different shades of the 3c, I'll bust out the perf gauge to try to identify them better later, and then the 5c I think is a #38, the 6c a#43 or color variation of #43, the 8c maybe a #44c? and then the 10c to my eyes at least looks like a #45, not sure how well it comes across in the photo, but it's definitely more "carmine" than "magenta" or "lilac."
Working through some bigger lots of these as well, again, once I've moved house (in the next month or two, we've planned on it, just need to find the right place!) I'll have a scanner and will be hopefully able to contribute more to this thread!
