Hi Guys Squared Circle cancels are large and cover a lot of a Small Queen stamp (and others) It is very difficult trying to see what is on ANY stamp with this cancel.
I not only flyspeck, i use all the tools a normal collector uses to enjoy this hobby. I also use different software programs to enhance my findings.
Below is what a normal Squared Circle cancel looks like and it's big size.
Here is my strip of Scott 35 Small Queen stamps with 2 squared Circle cancels on them..Normal cancels.
Now some times a collector would like to see what is underneath the cancel and high lite the cancel for a better look.
Software to remove the cancel showing you what is below the cancel.
Here is the cancel enhanced to reveal a better look at the actual cancel.
Find some software and enjoy more detailed stamp collecting.

Robert WERT I like RetroReveal to enhance some aspect of a cancel but what do you recommend to erase the cancel (which RetroR does not do) ? Thanks - René

In Dutch we have a saying, "Nu komt de aap uit de mouw"... Robert ( WERT ), the shotwell software is a really simple photo viewer with minimal capabilities even under Linux; what application did you use for manipulating the small queen strip?

Agreed Robert ( WERT ) there are some editing capabilities available in the Shotwell application, but do not see how it could be used to remove the cancel altogether as you illustrated. I tried with this stamp to duplicate your efforts and results with the same application; all to no avail. If you could provide the pointers, I would be interested in learning... Thanks, -Vince

Interesting results Robert; thanks for sharing. I can see how the manipulation could be accomplished in something like GIMP, but did you use the Shotwell application for this?

My compliments Robert ( WERT); I spent some time with the Shotwell application and it is more powerful than I was initially aware. Although I was unable to match your initial posted results, I am getting better and with time, may be able to achieve your level of mastery...
Best regards -Vince

Rene my good friend Enjoy..I am sending you the link...PDF...User manual.. BEWARE - 653 pages...haha You will get used to it like i did..Just takes time.
Robert
Here is an interesting fact.. This Ontario type II cancel has only 418 shown to exist.
1 - 3cent Jubilee - 5 on cover and 24 off cover. 2 - 2cent Map stamp - NONE on cover and NONE off cover. 3 - All others (which includes mine) - 58 on cover and 331 off cover. Now remember my strip is included in the 331 off cover and going what is left as per most experienced collectors claim, only 2% - 3% still exist.
Having said that, this would work out to approx.7- 10...Now of all the others, how many exist on 3cent Small Queen like the picture below. HOW RARE IS THIS STRIP..?

For those interested in Canada's Squared Circle Cancels, here is an interesting article from Linn's that provides a nice overview - Canada’s squared circle postmarks
One thing I learned from reading the article is that squared circle cancels were not limited to Canada but did occur on the postage of other countries as well according to Fred Baumann in his article,
"Squared circles soon canceled stamps in the states of Australia, much of British Africa, India, and New Zealand, and later in locales well beyond the British Empire, including Brazil, the Netherlands Indies and Antilles, Hawaii, Italy, and even far-flung cities such as Madrid and Shanghai."
Enjoy the read...

Some interesting facts and as part of my search with the term "squared circle" here on the board, I found this link from another TSF posting related to the cancels that provides details on quantity, RF, earliest usage, etc.,
Looking at my own collection of squared circles on Canada's Diamond Jubilee Issue and using the reference URL above, I was able to identify a Leamington, Ontario Type II cancel dated 5 August, 1897. Nothing unique or rare but until now, unidentified.
Thanks for the inspiration...

Nice links stanley64..Have them already. If you want a book, look for the book i have called "The Squared Circle Postmarks of Canada' by the BNA Philatelic Society.
That is all you will need... Robert

Hi Robert - can you say where it is that you find the population figures you use in your post? Are there other online resources that collate the data (new reports, population updates, etc). Thanks! Chris

I'd take an app removing data with a grain of salt. It doesn't know what is under the cancel. It just interpolates based on the colours surrounding what is been removed. If you are looking for a re-entry or fly-specking, this won't do a thing for you. No app can magically show you what isn't visible.

Thanks Robert. I see the data is about a decade old. I had hoped to find the unicorn website that would list the population data for a variety of items like perfs, ERD, etc. Guess not...

Indeed, there is plenty of software and tools available to help the collector and aid in identification of stamps, postmarks or other cancels. Sometimes though, as in this example, some patience, good-eye sight, and looking in the right place is all that is necessary.
This stamp, with its Squared Circle cancel was a bit baffling given it is only about 70% visible, not the strongest of cancels and was missing some key bits.
However, one can make out 'PORT' as the beginning of town or city and it is clearly marked 'ONT' (Ontario) so we have only a few options left:
PORT ARTHUR, ONT : RF10 PORT DOVER, ONT : RF65 PORT HOPE, ONT : RF10 PORT PERRY, ONT : RF30
Despite the software, tools and mental effort, in order to satisfactorily identify the cancel, all that was necessary was to be simply looking in the right place...
Happy collecting!

Hard to see the cancels on some stamps...I have always been a fan of software to make stamp collecting open up to new areas.
The software is use are as follows..BUT remember i don;t use MAC or WINDOWS...These are free {but would like a donation if you can}
gimp shotwell viewer gwyddion pinta shutter cheese gcolor2 kruler guview
Just a few..AGAIN I WOULD LOVE TO POST SOME AFFECTS OF WHAT THESE PROGRAMS COULD DO.. .BUT THE MODERATORS WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO POST PICTURES..SO SAD
Contemplating going back to my original stamp forum...There, i can post pictures.

Robert WERT.....please do not leave this Forum - you are a respected member - I did ask your opinion on my recent Post re: Canada 981 One does not have to "stick" to one Forum as many travel from one to another - I used to go often on the one you are talking about but did leave (though the CANADA thread is more active and at times interesting) since some members became "expert dictators" !! WERT , You have previously hosted your images on the imgbb.com site (the "Add image to post" button). If you are now trying to use the "Upload images" button, you must first request an account on the TSF Image Host. If you are using the imgbb host and are not allowed to upload, you must address the problem with them as we have no control over that platform. Please address any further image upload issues by personal message so as to not detract from the thread's focus.
