Even though my inventory of Romania stamps ended with a multitude of CTOs, as commented on another thread, I did come up on these interesting Postal Tax Stamps: 1921-24 Type Unwmk - RA13 PT3 10b green; RA14 PT3 25b Blk ('24); 1928 Wmk. 95 RA15 PT3 25b black I found 3 other PT3 stamps bearing 50b, 1L and 5L: these three were not issued for postal purposes, but used fiscally - They do not have a Scott # Scan shows all described stamps - René

CTO= Don't feel too bad about it Rene - I think most other collectors will find the same as well, many of the Rumanian stamps are simply difficult to find postally used - unfortunately

Scott lists the 5 bani and the 10 bani stamps in this scan as postal tax stamps, RA1 and RA2 and then has a note at the bottom which says, "Stamps of higher values with this inscription were used to pay the taxes on railway and theater tickets and other fiscal taxes." So, the two stamps on the right, the 50 bani and the 1 leu I assume would have been used for this purpose. Does anyone know which denomination was used for which tax? Why would there be a tax on theater tickets?

From here, 1915, it would appear that the 50b, 1 leu and 5 leu were general fiscal stamps rather than postal tax and so all would have been used for taxes on railway and theatre tickets and other fiscal purposes. As far as taxing theatre tickets is concerned, they're as good a source of revenue as anything else.

daniel, I am not sure why I didn't think to look there. Thanks for the link. It would be interesting to have examples on tickets.

I went back 2 days in a row to the stamp bourse that took place here in Grand Rapids, MI and managed to pick up quite a few items and spent about US$70. I did not go with the goal of purchasing more Romania but I ran across a number of pages from several collections stapled into a manila folder that contained really only one item that I wanted. This beautiful mint hinged copy of the 5 lei postal tax stamp that now completes the set of Romanian postal tax stamps that daniel posted a link to on the romaniastamps.com page. It was the sole stamp on the last page of this little packet of pages and it cost me a couple of bucks for all of the stamps.
