Anybody ever consider using a catalogue rack for holding stock cards? Seems like it might be a viable way to organize a fair amount of stock in an easily accessible location? Binders are fine but you pull them out, open them and it seems one binder takes up about as much surface space as a catalogue rack- small ones (14") start with 6 1" 3-ring sections. For those who don't know what these are, they are common at auto parts counters (or used to be... most are now pretty much digital as the cost toprint catalogues with constant needs for updating has become prohibitive) I'm about to try and re-organize my stamp area/room and well...just a thought sadly I think we just threw out a bunch of these not too long ago at work...

What an interesting idea. I think I’ve seen dealers at shows use something similar. Here is a pic of what I think he is talking about: image upload

Hi Having worked part time in a stamp store, I have to say that a display rack ("catalog rack") can fill up quite quickly. Also, they take up a bit of "real estate" and one "clamp" cannot hold all that many stock cards. Personally, I think one would better off with binders that have D-rings (easier turning of heavy stock cards). BTW: They are actually called TariFolds. Here are a couple of resources: Subway Stamp Shop Staples Office SupplyNeedless to say they are way more expensive than a good binder. Note, that one can purchase a lot of stamps with the difference in cost Jerry B

I used these at work for years until everyone stopped printing price books, so I am aware of footprint. In my case, shelf space is limited and currently I have binders and albums under my desk which is not real practical 9and they periodically get kicked by my size 14's... I'm going to poke around in our warehouse to see if maybe they didn't get tossed (a long shot)

Hi Stan
In Mainframe computer rooms we had these tarifolds holding essential User manuals.
One can always get "cheap" bookcases, that one assembles, at big-box stores like Wal-Mart. However, if you have a small room, that may not be an option.

I recall this things as well. But they didn't hold the pages flat. As long as you don't mind stamps with a lend in them, I guess they are OK. Personally, I hated the things!

Hi Stan
Actually, with heavy stiff Hagner type pages there is no "bending" (curved page lie??). However, they don't lie flat as a binder would.
A friend built a "stamp room" in his basement, complete with environment control. I don't know how he got it in the basement, but, he also had a large water free fireproof safe. That's one solution to extra room, but not cheap, especially with environment control.

Last year I had the same problem of not enough space for my growing collection. So I turned a clothes closet into my stamp shelves, worked out perfectly. Took out the bifold doors/clothes rod, some cutting & painting, and very pleased with result. (Of course, it's grown again since then, so maybe I need to repeat the project!).

stainlessb - I wouldn't call myself that, at least not yet. I have built some guitars and a handful of tube amplifiers, though. When I get back from my trip in April, I have a couple of acoustics on the bench I want to finish.

I have two of the catalogue racks that you speak of. I used to use them when I was an antique dealer. The biggest problem with them is pages folding over. It seems pages always get bent, or folded over, when using them. I have them in a plastic tub, somewhere in my storage unit. I have old advertising material in them, which is still in them I am sure.

Does this mean that under high heat, there is no condensation inside the safe?

Hi angore
I am not sure how the water free fireproof safes work. However, I was told that there would be no stamp damage. Maybe there is some kind of silica gel that absorbs the condensation. That is the only thing I can think of.
