Just noticed different perfs on these 3c coils, #3759. No mention in the 2020 Specialized. Large and small home perforation varieties have been added to the liberty series, but I haven’t seen anything written on this issue. Any info on these Anyone?

When we think of stamp perforations we almost always think of pins punching holes into paper, but there is a relatively recent style of perforation that uses a sort of slicing or abrasion - a die pushes some dents into the paper and then a machine shaves off the tops of those dents, leaving behind a surface around the perforation hole on the back side of the stamp that looks scarred or scuffed, rather than the clean edge given by a sharp pin punch. Your image shows that kind of scuffing, so I'm pretty sure these are stamps that use that style of shaving / sanding for creating perforations. I didn't search long - I don't really know the proper nomenclature for this type of perforation, but have a look at this kind-of-incomplete thread on SCF - it gives you an idea of how these perforations work, and Glenn Morgan (an expert in various fields and the author of the excellent stampprinters.info website, I think Londonbus1 is in regular contact with him) specifically mentions variance in hole sizes which can result. I did not see it mentioned at the PNC3 (www.pnc3.org) web site. They usually are top of any varieties.

SCF found it mentioned on the tagging portion of the stamp smarter site ... that site really is useful

angore I check there, too, for coil info because they really are the best source, so yeah, was surprised these weren’t mentioned. I’ll have to read up on those sites you recommended, Ryan. These types of varieties really interest me.

Now I hear that on PNC3 you might see the different perfs on the same coil strip? I’ll see if I can find a pic of that because It just sounds very weird to me. Time to learn more about perforating equipment, eh?
