vikingeck This is a non existing New Brunswick Stamp and a very poor "forgery" of the 5 ¢ Charles Connell brown stamp (Unitrade Canada Specialized # 5) Everything is wrong on this stamp (not only color). Note that the "real" # 5 Connell was never issued in New Brunswick as this Postmaster, in 1860, decided to put his face on a N.B. Stamp rather than Queen Victoria. He lost his job and a lot of history is published around what happened to the remaining stamps, since they were not destroyed completely. A few are of existence today and they bring around $20,000.00 at Auction. I do not own one and do not want one. I hope NBStamper reads this thread and puts his grain of salt !! René

Rene,
Glad to see that you weighed in on this. I knew from first glance there was something wrong with the “ stamp” . I was certain it was a forgery.

It is indeed an obvious forgery , the crude “engraving” and the small reversed 5 in the bottom corners are an obvious give away. However I was hoping someone might know the origin/ manufacturer of this item. It is evidently 19th century rather than more recent.

I will save the scan and send it to the New Brunswick Stamp Club members (of which I am but not very active since it is almost 200 miles away). This year, we are hosting the 2020 "ROYAL" Convention - Royal Philatelic Society of Canada - annual major event, June 19-21 in Fredericton, N.B. René

Jumping in to ask... is it worth saving in this condition? I know there aren't many New Brunswick stamps issued...

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

There are only about 50 of the real Connell stamps in existence. I'm told a good copy recently sold at a NY auction for $22,000; but I've also seen them priced at under $10,000. Many of the surviving copies are flawed to some extent. If you want to have a good reproduction of the stamp in your collection, your best bet is to look for a proof. There are usually one or two listed on eBay or elsewhere and will sell for well under $500. That forgery is so bad, unless I were trying to assemble a collection of forgeries for exhibit, I think I wouldn't bother keeping it. But that's just me and one person's opinion.

I agree nbstamper, and only keep it for its awfulness……and the story behind the originals . I am reminded of the only other “self portrait” stamp of the British Empire era I know of , when living people other than HER/HIS MAJESTY was taboo is the 1900 siege of Mafeking in the South African war when Baden-Powell had himself pictured on a local stamp . But that was not intended for international mail. But that is another story.
