Using the "Post Offices and Postmasters" Library and Archives Canada I did a boolean search for the easily visible portion of the cancel - *tonville and came up with 20 results some of which were easily dismissed as candidates given their opening dates but that still left me with quite a few options:
For those with knowledge of split ring cancels, do they exist for my remaining three candidates?
Appreciate any additional thoughts or input...

Winmill says they exist but his chapter is quit limited on the subject, in his Canadian 1998 Map Stamp book.
René Have to do more research

Here is another split ring cancel, this one being on the 5¢ Beaver Stamp of Canada (Scott No. 15) from Napanne, UC.

For those interested in learning more about split-ring or broken-circle cancels, the Postal History Society of Canada has great introduction on these iconic Canadian postmarks...

Stanley64 I have studied the position of the lettering and i think it is a 11 letter word which would narrow it down to 3 possible towns.
1 - Newtonville - Digby, Nova Scotia. 2 - Newtonville - Durham Ontario. 3 - Beatonville - Inverness, Nova Scotia.
Just my opinion...Robert

Thanks for the input and I appreciate you looking Robert ( WERT)! The three cities you listed were in the original results from the output of the "Post Offices and Postmasters" Library and Archives, but I eventually crossed them off.
I agree with your thoughts that it is an eleven-letter city name but I believe it starts with the letter "B" and hence the elimination of Neetonville as one of the candidates. At the same time, the provincial cancel has a strong vertical line as part of it, so I eliminated both Nova Scotia and Quebec cities from the list of possible candidates. This leaves only the three Ontario cities that matches the eleven letter component: Bentonville, Buttonville and Bartonville.
All this is missing is the third clue for positive identification...

This split-circle cancel is more easily identified and comes from Colborne.
Postal cover with Colborne, (UC?) cancel dated September 2, 1863 & 5¢ Beaver stamp of Canada (Scott No. 15)
On a historical note, the community of Colborne is named after John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton and there is plenty of reading material available about the man and his life including this article - Sir John Colborne...

stanley64 That beaver cover is beautiful...Something is kinda odd...Your cover shows Sep.2 / 1863....BUT, BUT, look at the bottom of the split ring. At the bottom of your cancel shows ""W.C.""....Frank W. Campbell Canada Post Offices shows your split ring as ""C.W."". The post office when adjusting the time stamp may have reversed the "C,W," to "W.C." by mistake..see picture below. Very, interesting cover my friend.

Good eyes Robert ( WERT )!
The plot thickens though; from you posting, I went back and re-examined the cover as I recalled the receivership mark on the back was also a split-ring cancel, in this case from Guelph the next day, September 3, 1863.
Indeed, there is something odd here; the receiver marking has as its cancel the letters reversed as well, if our information is correct. Hence my initial posting stated "UC" Upper Canada given the consistency between the two...warrants a second look :-)

That is correct, the second cancel is Guelph for sure...Now to add the the thought process, below is a cancel that does not
have "C.W." OR "W.C.", but has "U.C." as in Upper Canada...You have more investigating on this lovely cover. Robert
On second look, MAYBE the front cancel could actually be "U.C," and i could be mistaken...Without having it in my hand.

I appreciate the offer Robert, but not right now; I only have the one ;-)
In the meantime, I did take the opportunity to upload the full back of the cover though and note the similarities of the embossing found on the back flap. I believe mine has cherries, whilst René's is a ____? I am curious now as to who the manufacturer of the envelopes was and what did they contain? The cancel dates makes them too early for a Christmas card...

Alexander & Stark (Stock Brokers and Estate Agents) Toronto., advertising Cover tied with Canada's Small Queen issue (Scott No. 37) paying the 3¢ domestic rate.

Here is a couple of SQ canceled covers....You should check yours...Found oddities with cancels.
No cancel on this cover...It is what we call a "magic monkey marker" cancel...
This SQ cover has NO date identified...I know it is 1893 though.
Now, take a good look at these two cancels....The post master changing dates was not really paying attention. The right ""8"" of this 1888 date is inverted..Not standard.
Now here is another 1888 date...BOTH 8's are inverted...Some old time post masters really should take notice.

In keeping with the thread topic and on the subject of recent discoveries, here is another find for Canada's Imperial Penny Postage,
MERTON, ONT Split Circle w/ Purple-Ink Strike.
The discovery aspect is that R.B. Winmill is his text, "The Evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and The Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp" lists only nineteen coloured cancels.
This recent find would make it an even twenty...
Happy collecting!
