Have not found a specific thread just for the cancels of the Map Stamp though the subject did appear in another thread but the title wass not appropriate for this as I am not discussing plating. WERT help me with this one !! Am putting up a color scan of #86b and a RetroReveal study of same stamp - I am trying to find the date and origin of this circle cancel (RPO strike) Thanks ! René

Can you please explain the differences to me? I was only aware of two varieties. 85 and 86 are not varieties they are Lavender and Blue 85i is grey and 86b ia deep blue....varieties and there are others cited in the catalog but these are the most common Ref: Unitrade Canada Specialized Catalog 2019 (my 2020 copy not in yet) René

Am putting up a color scan of #86b and a RetroReveal study of same stamp - I am trying to find the date and origin of this circle cancel (RPO strike)
Looks like a circular-date stamp from Seaforth, Ontario (16 June, XX) to my eyes, René (note: no direction or timemarkings typical of an R.P.O) As well, I have yet to see an R.P.O that does not include the "&"...

Hi, are you sure this is an RPO, Seafoth ONT JU 16 (19)10?
These days Seaforth has a population of around 2500+/-, I would imagine it was less a century ago and the first PO was built in 1859.

Sorry Rene
This cancel is Seaforth Ontario, no to far from me.
This town is a hour or two away from me. Here is a "New Topographical Atlas" ""The Province of Canada - Ontario""
Page 25 under Huron County.
Robert
My book ""Canada Post Offices 1755-185"" does not have that cancel..Looks like a regular Seaforth cancel.

Looks like "SEAFORTH ONT" dated Jun 16, year unknown.
Seaforth is nowhere near the sea, and is southeast of Goderich & Clinton.

Thanks stanley64 for your response that got a bit mixed by me saying it was an RPO strike which it is not.....the more I looked at it since it was a given from Stan stainlessb, from California, I think I identified 1910 as the year ...for a Map Stamp of 1898 used 12 years after issue date ?? René

Nice stamp and CDS postmark René. Maybe you posted a bit too early in the morning, and confused RPO for CDS? I'm groggy in the morning to, so I normally don't post anything before I've had a proper cup of coffee, or three I confused Chlorhexidine for Hydrogen peroxide the other day, so welcome to the club. Seems to me the year slugs are indeed reading '10'. Agree with brightonpete , somewhat late usage however not exactly a surprise. Nice strike regardless, and not a common place, at least I don't have in my CDS collection yet. A fine keeper renden

BTW Jon I never post before having coffee and thee Blame goes to Winhill's chapter RPO strikes - Page 44 and my vertical reading - but he never explained what RPO means and looking at examples of strikes I did a boo-boo - CDS is on page 84

.Hey Rene....It may NOT be an inverted date....Some stamps can be use 5, 10, 25 and longer..It could actually be a 1910 date..Just a thought

René All good René ( renden )! Your zeal and enthusiasm for the hobby and for this stamp in particular, was felt even on this side of the pond - as mentioned, all good :-)
With the regards the late date, why not? I do not know of an "expiry date" at least for Canadian stamps, and have received my share of issues from the 1950s & '60s even on recent mailings here in the 21st century.
One of the keys for me that this a 1910 CDS is the three-letter month, not sure when it changed, but the earlier issues I have seen are always two-letters e.g. JU, JY, and not JUN, JUL, etc.
Still a great cancel and a lovely stamp; I like the red-plate shift to the right by at least 1mm...

How about an inverted year slug in the cancel? '01' So good to hear from you cjd! I was thinking exactly the same at first, however then it occurred to me the year slugs normally remained in place throughout the year, so if it was inverted one might think someone would have noticed by that month and corrected the slugs? Then again, the slugs might have been inadvertently removed and then reinserted upside down. Many possibilities. I still believe it's just a matter of late usage. Might even have been used on a philatelic cover, which would explain the nice strike. (As we know, late usage is commonly found on philatelic covers)
