A very Happy Christmas to all TSF members and Best Wishes for a 'stampy' New Year 2020 ! We have just had our Christmas feast. I have been cooking for much of the day but it was worth it. No real celebrations here of course but it is Hannukah too so we lit the candles before the Christmas meal. Have fun all. Londonbus1

Happy New Year!
Ya know I’ve always thought January first was such an arbitrary date. A solstice or an equinox would make more sense to me.

Traditionally the Roman calendar started in March - which is also when the senate chose new senators, hence the "ides of March" (15th March) being so important in Shakespeare's play Julius Cesar. It is believed one of the (semi-mythical) kings of Rome changed it to January in about 300 BC for one of two reasons: either to honour Janus (the Roman god of beginnings) which January is named after, or because they wanted to force the senate back to being in office a few months earlier to allow planning for a coming war. I'm more inclined to the second interpretation myself... BTW - the Celts in most of Western Europe celebrated their new year at Samhain (which we now recognize as All Hallow's Evening - or Halloween), which fits with your thoughts Theresa ( philatelia)!
