What I collect: US from 1847-1940

Post by pascoe on Jan 15, 2020 21:38:38 GMT
Greetings community, Here are some relevant philatelic facts about myself and things I will use this forum to learn more about: Bold phrases are hyperlinks, give em a click - Began collecting at age 9/10, introduced to the hobby by my mother
- Like most, walked away from collecting around high school
- Picked up the hobby again at age 35 when I inherited my great-grandmother in-law's stamp collection, she was the post mistress of Tombstone AZ from 1928-1936
- I enjoy collecting US stamps prior 1940, mostly "classics"
- Favorite stamp is US Scott #35, 1857, 10 cents, Washington, Green, Type V
- Focusing on filling in spaces in my Mystic Heirloom Hingeless Volumes I-III
- I sell my duplicate stamps on eBay - redbnr22
- I have a podcast about stamp collecting called Dissecting Philately
- I spend a good amount of time on twitter: @mpascoe - @dissecphilately
- I've been a contributing member of Stamp Community Family for years - pascoe
- I maintain a Wiki related to stamp collecting
- I have introduced my 4 and 6 year old daughters to stamp collecting (see image below)
- The only stamp show in my area (Denver, CO) is ROMPEX, and I have been attending since 2017
- I am interested in / have mediocre collections of US: plate blocks, coil pairs, back of book, the topic of anatomy (I am an anatomy professor at the medical school), cut squares, pre cancels
- When I travel, I try to make custom covers with a stamp related to the location/event/person and have them hand cancelled at the local post office (see image below)
- Contemplating joining the APS
- I also collect Great Britain
What else would you like to know about me? Drop me a reply if you share any of the interested listed above and I look forward to learning from you all. pascoe

Welcome to our Forum!
I've adjusted your membership status so you can begin posting elsewhere. Once you clear the 15 day/50 post hurdle you will have access to the Buy, Sell, Trade category.
It is good to see another U.S.- focused collector come on board -- that area of the Forum has seen very little activity lately.
Should you decide to move forward on the APS membership, consider noting that you were sponsored/referred by our Chapter (1591 APS #222596). If/when we receive the $5 referral bonus I'll pass it back to you.
Let me know if you have questions or encounter problems.
p.s., What areas are your daughters interested in?

What areas are your daughters interested in? Thus far they really haven't "focused" on anything. They have been very interested in Disney characters on stamps as well as horses. It's really just amazing to lay out some stamps with them and watch their minds and mouths go. They ask me who/what is on every stamp and what the significance is. This is exactly the kind of learning material my kids need. They already know a lot of the US Presidents and what they are notable for. One of the best things is that many times I don't know the answer (important to role model this) and so we grab a book and look for the answer. Stamp collecting = life long learning. Can you tell I'm an educator? Haha!

Thanks for sharing your philatelic facts and interests; I will have a visit to some of the links shared...
For now though and reading about your interest in anatomy, I thought of two Rembrandt paintings both portrayed on the 1968 issues from Togo and are part of my art & artists-on-stamps thematic collection,
Rembrandt. (1632) The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp [Oil on canvas].Mauritshuis Museum, Den Haag Nederland.
Rembrandt. (1656) The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Jan Deyman [Oil on canvas].
Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Amsterdam Nederland.
Again, welcome to the Forum & Happy Collecting!

to TSF! Thanks for an extensive presentation of yourself. I'm also trying to get my 6-year-old to get interested in stamps, but it's touch-and-go.

Welcome to TSF, pascoe! I really like your detailed intro post, and I will also make a point of checking out some the links. I also really like the beautiful stamp whose image you have used for your avatar--very nice, indeed! Fabulous centering and margins.... Echoing what others have said, I also think it's also great what you are doing with your kids. I tried to get my nephew interested in stamps when he was younger, around age 8, and he took to it initially, but sadly he was shamed for his interest by his former macho stepfather, and he gave it up. Ah, well. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some posts of your material, and again, welcome aboard. Enjoy your time with us! -Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

These are excellent items that I was unaware of. I still need to see if a topical collecting society out there has an "anatomy" checklist. I am certain there is a "medicine" checklist out there.

Glad to see you have the next generation interested in our great hobby. Absolutely, this hobby has something to offer to all ages. Has a bit of a stigma behind it (boring/nerdy). I'm just so glad to see that this is a pursuit that involves analog leisure = no screens!!!

Ah, well. Yep, that shaming stigma is strong with some. With everything in life, what's the big "why" behind the collecting. I make it very clear that it's a great way to learn about the world we live in. Of course I think it's way easier with my own daughters in my home because they see me working on stamps and they naturally ask questions and want to be engaged. We head out to the Denver Young Collector's Meeting tomorrow morning put on by the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library. Always a fun time!

Welcome pascoe ! I think I've listened to your podcast in the past! No way! I'm actually not too surprised. I imagine if you have search for philately or stamp collecting on the major podcast platforms (overcast, anchor, iTunes/Apple, Spotify), you'll find very little and perhaps me a handful of others! That's a topic of one of my Dissecting Philately podcast episodes...my favorite philatelic podcasts.

Welcome, Mike! What you could do, among other things, is to create maxicards and cacheted covers with anatomical images, including interesting short text/trivia, all in the image. Then sharing those images online and offline would be highly educational, and also promotional for philately. Also, you can discretely add some of your links at the bottom of the maxicard/cover image, under "Designed by Mike..."
