I believe it's a Test (or sample) stamp but I cannot put my fingers on the info although it's here somewhere. There exists a similar type in purple from the USA. I will come back to this if no one adds anything before.

These were printed blanks ( with inverted watermark) used in strips to test penny coin in the slot stamp machines..
The green ones are quite commonly found , not an error , a legitimate Post Office item. They are also found in red but these are not common.
GB also had similar in the 1930s photogravure issues , like the definitive stamp in green with the portrait replaced with a large oval . They had a similar test function and are nicknamed “ poached egg”

Interesting thread, stamptracker, thanks for sharing! And thanks to Michael ( Londonbus1) and Alex ( vikingeck) for unraveling the mystery. In looking at the image in the first post, I can see why someone would have thought that it looks like the Australian issue depicting the Queen Mother. Now with these revelations, and just to be clear, the green stamp with no central image and frame similar to the Australia green stamp showing the Queen Mother is actually from Great Britain, not Australia. Have I understood that correctly? If that is correct, then I would suggest that this thread should be re-titled and moved to a better location on the boards, as it actually has nothing to do with Australia or the Queen Mother issue. Just my opinion.... A great thread in any case, irrespective of where it's located.

The item shown by stamptracker is in the correct place....Australia. The item shown by vikingeck is a similar item from Great Britain. You can see the USA ones I mentioned and some more 'Poached Eggs' here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/1106/dummy-training-sample-proof-essayBut I am still trying to find the info about the Aussie types which I know I have here somewhere

Thanks for your post, Londonbus1! In re-reading Alex's ( vikingeck) post, I see where I got the wrong end of the stick. Sorry about that. I can simply delete the earlier post if it does not add anything of value to the thread (and this one, too).
