Can someone tell me the method for determining French postage rates on a piece of mail using older franc-value stamps. Is there an established exchange rate between francs and euros? Thank you. 2 covers recently received

A good percentage of mail I get from France has franc denomination stamps. The rate of exchange is 6.55 ff approx to one euro, for stamps issued after 1961 when the new franc came into use. For stamps issued before 1961,one NF is 100 old francs . Confusing...

Actually, the French post office got swindled on these two covers. All three stamps featured here are denominated in old Francs, as they date from before 1960. Although they are still valid postage (all French stamps, even the very first ones, are still accepted as postage), they actually would only represent a couple of Euro cents in today's value. But machine cancellers are not programmed to recognize them, so stamp dealers especially find it an useful way to revalue their old stock.

anglobob - thanks for the info. I started last night looking up the issue dates of the stamps but ended up too tired to do the exchange rate math. That is one BEAUTIFUL single franking 50 franc cover. Just Beautiful! I hope you don't soak hrdoktorx - yep, that's what it looks like. Both were Delcampe purchases. I need to see if I can match up the purchase with the seller and see what I was charged for postage! At least 2 euros each. I tried matching to no avail, that's a problem with matching seller IDs with return address names. I appreciate the assistance from both of you

Thanks Jeff... Will be leaving that stamp on the cover. You raise a couple of interesting points here. All of my mail is registered so it is easy for me to match up purchases .This was also a Delcampe purchase and I was charged 8.30 euros plus another 2 euros handling fee....for the privilege of using Paypal.!!! This is one of my big beefs with Delcampe....paying extra fees to use Paypal.Unfortunately,I have to live with it as its the only way I can get most of the stamps I am looking for.....Maybe this could be a topic for another thread ??
