hello all, and sincere thanks for acceptance as a member on TSF, so here are a few words about myself. I'm in the London area of the U.K., and collected stamps a long way back just before our currency went decimal, then married and parted with all I had, and only been back collecting for a few months now. Suppose it's an age thing, but I prefer older stamps - a lot older than me usually - I've a passion for history, and holding a stamp from the C19 gives a buzz - wondering who bought it, where it travelled and where its been since - so I tend to stick to pre 1970s, with a preference for U.K. Commonwealth, G.B., plus military, official and government overprints, of which there are a lot in the Commonwealth. The line engraved definitives are always appealing, and many issues from first half C20 are quite the little works of art. I'd forgotten how many countries comprised the Commonwealth - it's frightening - I had visions of having to buy scores of albums, but relieved to see there's now a something that certainly wasn't around when I collected before - this is the on-line facility to download ready made illustrated album pages, or buy a disc. with country-specific pages, in colour. Does anyone have any particular tips in that direction please? - nothing worse than trying to keep a large country collection - in chronological order - in just a stock book.
Looking briefly at some of the input from members here, the in depth expertise is staggering, so will be marvellous to benefit from their knowledge.
I think I've bought too many used stamps during my return to collecting - it's o.k. if they're fine with a light cancellation, but some of mine are a tad too obscured by the post office, so trying to stick to unused where possible, and ebay can be a good source if used with care, and I've been surprised how inexpensive some of my purchases have been. Look forward to joining in with some of the conversations and learning along the way.:-)
regards
Paul1

Welcome to the forum from another UK member paul1! Among other things I'm also interested in Commonwealth stamps, and I definitely agree with the incredible size of this area. We're a friendly bunch and always happy to discuss and help, so feel free to reach out on any topic. As you said, there is a lot of incredible expertise on the forum. Welcome again, and looking forward to seeing some of your collection on here. Chris

Welcome to a great group. Regarding used - you may be surprised to see that a bunch of us prefer postally used. Those stamps actually worked for a living and their cancels contains so much historical information making them boatloads more complex than a mint stamp. And older covers with all the markings, etiquettes and such - pure delight! Some of us collect both, some only mint as a pristine mint copy is lovely, too. BUT the important thing is COLLECT WHICHEVER WAY MAKES YOU HAPPY!

Hi Paul, nice to have you aboard!
I usually collect mint as well, but a beautifully cancelled stamp wins over mint! Although one won't replace the other! Just more to collect!

Welcome to a good place paul1 Great to have you with us, looking forward to see what you are interested in and some of your stuff. I would in general simply recommend the so-called Steiner-pages (use Google). They cover entire WW, are extremely cheap in comparison to the major work to create them - and they can be modified to your liking. Steiner will provide a full set for WW, however not in colors, and in general no stamp-images at all. Simple and clean and very popular by collectors. I believe some have used Steiners pages, added images in colors and changed frames etc, and selling this as their own work, which does not sound right to me. I think there is a separate thread in this forum listing various sites where you can download free album pages for various countries, but I do not think you will find all countries, at least not all in the same format/style, as you will by Steiner. Admins may be able to help you with a link to the relevant thread. Good luck Paul, enjoy your stamps and your time with us!

Welcome Paul1.....great group here, with a wide range of collectors and themes. I also collect British Commonwealth,QE2 definitive sets before independence.I have never found a place to download pages and am not keen on Steiner pages,so with the help of my wife,I make my own pages. They are very basic, just the country name and SG numbers .

Welcome to TSF, paul1! I am a US expatriate living in the UK since last October. I am in Oxford, so not too far from London. I am a WW classics collector, but also have a special attraction to British Commonwealth, and yes indeed, there is plenty to be getting on with, as they say around here. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some posts of your new material! Kind Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

I am with you; give me the buzz!! Nothing like the thrill of discovery, the sense of adventure or the excitement of completion, all wrapped up and reachable with a single pair of stamp tongs :-) Mint or used, it all good and I look forward to the interaction and seeing some of your collection...
Enjoy your time here and happy collecting!
