I was recently contacted by Ms. Paula Zeman, a member of Cabinet's editorial staff. Cabinet is a non-profit art and cultural organization founded in 1999. Cabinet's core activity is the publication of Cabinet magazine, but it also publishes books and CDs, along with performing other activities. Cabinet is currently working on a reprint of C. K. Ogden's book, BASIC by Picture Stamps (1941). They are seeking assistance from our membership in acquiring color scans (600dpi) of the 800+ stamp images appearing in the book (the book is out of print and only available as a black and white copy). A PDF copy of the book may be downloaded here. Ms Zeman has prepared a list of all of the stamp images in the book -- it is available here. The images still needed are marked in red. If you are able to assist, please contact Ms. Zeman directly: paula AT cabinetmagazine DOT org.

I had emailed earlier, asking about whether it had to be unused stamps. I will post here if I get a reply. Most of my WW collection is used. I guess meanwhile I'll just start scanning the unused stamps I have that are on their list. Taking a quick glance at the pdf, I did see at least one stamp in the book that was cancelled. But obviously, the great majority of the pics in the book are unused stamps.

I forgot to ask them if they preferred it scanned on black or white background, although they should be able to digitally process it. My cheapie scanner tends to shadow on one side, so the perfs don't show as well on one side when scanning on a white background.
I emailed a couple of sample pics of their Brazil requests, and will ask them about their background preference.

In response to the question regarding images of used or unused stamps, Ms. Zeman provided the following:

In response to the question regarding images of used or unused stamps, Ms. Zeman provided the following: For some reason she missed my first email to her that asked that question. So thanks for posting her reply. She did reply to my second email about the background. She said black background is OK. Their preference is TIFF, but BMP is OK. Since there will be several involved in this project, can we post pics/lists of what we have scanned in this thread? That will avoid duplication of effort. If posting lists, we should also state whether our pic was for unused or used stamp. Would that be OK Admin?

If posting lists, we should also state whether our pic was for unused or used stamp. Would that be OK Admin ? If individuals did that, others would have to scan the entire thread to determine if a particular stamp had already been found. To be useful, Forum staff would have to compile the list and keep it updated as additions are noted. Unfortunately, I haven't the time for such an undertaking. Rather, I suggest simply adding either "TSF Used" or TSF Unused" in the comment section of the spreadsheet Ms. Zeman has already prepared (see example below).

Actually, staff wouldn't have to do anything. Those of us participating would simply mark it off on the spreadsheet list Paula provided as we check this thread. All participants would have to do is simply state the page#, pic#, unused/used as feebletodix has done. I was simply wondering if those helping could use this thread to post what has already been scanned. For example, if hrdoktorx has 80 of the stamps that he is going to scan, that means I (and others) will have probably 20-30 fewer stamps to hunt/remove/scan/re-insert, which is likely 2-3 hours of work on stamps I can skip if I know he has already done it. It's faster for me to look through this thread and mark off the spreadsheet, than to duplicate those scans being made by others. feebletodix, hrdoktorx... could maybe edit their posts to update their lists. I was asking if OK because I didn't want to clutter up this particular thread. Or maybe we could start a new thread for members to post lists of what they have already scanned? Just a thought.

I received this as an additional reply from Paula (other information has already been covered by others) A brief addition: You probably already know this, but one way to send files without compression is using wetransfer: wetransfer.com/ It is free and easy to handle. I would be very grateful if you could spread this information in the forum as well.
