Please select your favorite article from this issue. The poll will remain open until Midnight, August 31, 2020; results will not be displayed until the poll closes. Similar polls will be created to identify the favored article for each subsequent issue of the Newsletter. During September 2020, the four "favorites" will be included in a final poll to select the article which will represent the Forum as its 2020 APS Article of Distinction. What I collect: Pretty much everything now, but may focus on Japan and pre-WW2 British colonies

Re. Opinion's on Lurkers: I am one, and in the third category. I have re-discovered stamp collecting and think that I will eventually focus on colonial India, Queen Victoria (any nation) and Japan, but for now am figuring out my interests as I catalog over 5000 stamps that I recently acquired. I've joined a local stamp club and find the folks there extremely friendly and helpful, and they have quickly become my "go-to" resource for questions that I have. I do come here every now and then to see what's going on and such.
Couple of things that make me a lurker:
1. From the opinion piece: " Unfortunately, these beginning collectors may have been intimidated and discouraged by the treatment they may have receivedon other sites. There are too many self-made "experts" that look down on "newbies". Based ontheirprior experience, these new collectors may assume they will get the same treatment on TSF." Well, at first I was all gung-ho about posting here and learning but I must say I did receive an officious sounding reprimand about quoting messages when replying. Its a bit nitty, IMO, but whatever. 2. The rule on exceeding 50 messages before participating in give aways and other areas of the forum. I don't like to make meaningless posts just to increase my post count, so it'll be a while before I go past 50. In the interim, I'd have missed out on several give aways. Give aways to new collectors is a great way to encourage them, IMO. So this 50 message rule works against that, but again, whatever. I do find these rules smack a bit of exclusivity. Forgive my forthright attitude.

Interestingly the email with link to the newsletter brought me back to this forum and I've added it into my bookmarks, so I've gone from previously active to inactive to active! Enjoyed all the articles.

Hi Katie! katie333 great to see your avatar! zeebanker - I read your your post and I can understand why you might not care for the 50 post minimum. Trust me, it really is a good idea. In order for the members to do enjoyable giveaways, there has to some trust that those participating reciprocate in some small way - at least by being active members. There are, sadly, a few “stamp hoover’s” who jump into forums to grab free offers and give nada in return. That is extremely annoying to both the active members and to the host of the giveaway. Setting a minimum time to be a member doesn’t guarantee participation, but requiring posts does. There is no absolutely perfect way to set the bar for declaring a member “active”, but the 50 minimum is reasonable. And the post on lurkers was an opinion by one member - all forums have lurkers. I believe that the reasons for lurking are a bit more diverse and complex than those mentioned. But, in any case, the best way to lure lurkers into activity is to have a FUN, vibrant, friendly and intellectually interesting mix of posts. I think our little group does that quite well considering that our consistently active members are not that numerous - below 100 (not sure on the numbers.) BUT it is good that you posted as it is helpful to know where we can do better. 😉

In order for your selection to be recorded in the final tally, you must make a selection in the poll (stating your selection in a post will not be recorded).

I'm a newcomer (hopely, not a lurker!) as I enroled just 6 days ago. I enjoyed the latest Newsletter, as I'm doing with the earlier issues. On this issue, I specilay liked "Terri's adventures on Bermuda POs". Very well written and with a fresh humor sense. Congratulations, Terri!

Wow! Thanks for pulling this together Steve; the number of articles and quality of writing is top drawer. I am impressed with the breadth and depth of the content :-) With so many articles I have not completed my readings, but have downloaded and printed off a copy for later. Thus far though, "The Stars and Stripes Forever" stands out for me as I share a similar collector's outlook and philosophy with darkormex vis-à-vis definitives; the working stamp of the postal system. With time on my side, here's to the ongoing readings and my thanks to the other contributors... Happy collecting!

Wow! I'm "competing" with a bunch of big-leaguers! What an honor! (and a bit of an imposter syndrome, tbh)
Good luck folks! I think my favorite is Vancouver and BC's Half Ounce letter rates. Nice pieces!

102 of the Forum's almost 500 members have signed into their accounts since the 1st of May but only 26, thus far, have taken the time to identify their favorite article from this issue. I'd like to see the efforts of those who have contributed to the Newsletter recognized by more than a fraction of the Forum's membership.

Speaking for myself Will , I think the "big-leaguers" in this instance are Steve and the support he gets from others for pulling the newsletter together! We can all write, our postings make that self-evident and if one has not already done so, I would encourage others to write an article for an up-coming edition... Happy collecting!
PS. I will vote and do encourage others to do the same, but I need to finish reading first ;-)

I vote for the Venezuelan Postal Stationery Article. It was most informative and well researched. Since I am originally from a neighbor country of Venezuela, I do collect Venezuelan stamps but not postal stationery, after such a brilliant article, I am inclined to begin collecting this area. Thank you for a wonderful article.

Mea culpa...
An earlier version of this article failed to identify both the Kermadec Islands of the Australia & New Zealand region and omitted Lagos, one of the four colonies to the east of Nigeria.
Happy collecting!
