What I collect: a random collection of mostly early things, and other stuff that I like... but especially Baden.

Hi Folks,
I've been posting on a certain other forum for several years, but wanted to come somewhere more civilised! I'm based in the middle of nowhere, in Wales (UK), and have eclectic interests. I'm a scientist (and musician) by background, so I tend to like to go into detail, rather than collecting on a very broad scale. My main specialism is Baden (Grand Duchy period, pre-1972), but I also like the other German States, and dabble in a lot of early Europe, plus random other stuff. If this sounds like I'm rich, then it seriously isn't true - I've put together semi-decent collections by spotting good things in the price range I can afford (which is extremely low! ), but had a huge amount of pleasure from doing so. I've also got a much lighter thematic collection about sponges (Porifera), as marine biology (and natural history generally) is a passion of mine. Anyhow, I liked the look of these forums and thought I'd sign up. Looking forward to meeting you all! Joe

welcome randomjoe to TSF. Porifera, I experimented with propagation of the smaller shallow water /reef) sponges seen in the marine aquarium hobby (as well as other species, fish corals, shrimp) as a way to reduce impact of harvest from the tropical reefs (many of the collecting practices were non-sustainable or downright destructive). Worked in inland fisheries (trout, salmon and endangered species), and also a musician, so we have a bit in common! I hope you enjoy your time here Stan Northern California

Thanks, folks! Stan, that's interesting! I've heard that sponges are either very frustrating to try to propagate... unless you really don't want them to, in which case you can't stop them! Good to meet someone helping with the plight of reefs; they have plenty to worry about at the moment, without exploitative collecting practices. (Unfortunately, coral reefs are one of the worst-hit ecosystems in previous mass extinctions, even though they always seem to re-evolve eventually... it just takes longer than I'd care to wait!)

Welcome to TSF, Joe ( randomjoe )! I am also in the UK, in Oxford, England. I have been to Wales in years past, but not recently. I went to Cardiff a few times. I hope to be able to explore Wales more after the pandemic is over. When it comes to stamps, I love older material too, so looking forward to seeing some of your stuff. Cheers, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy )

Welcome to the gang, randomjoe! You’ll find many kindred spirits here who also enjoy the classics. Marine biologist eh? Very cool! Our area (Florida) is peppered with marine institutes and research stations.

So many welcomes! Thank you all - it's a real pleasure to be here!
Philatelia: I'm actually a palaeontologist, but the marine biology is something that helps me understand the fossils. And it's just amazing. I've recently got a prescription diving mask (being incredibly short sighted), but have only had a chance to use it once... and now we're locked down, a long way from the (rather chilly, especially by Florida standards) sea! One day...
Chris: I really hope you get to explore Wales more - Cardiff is the least Welsh bit of the country, to be honest. It's a really beautiful place, but can take a while for the peace and gentleness of the landscape to seep in and take you over. Oxford, though? Oh dear, oh dear. I'm afraid I'm from the other place, if you know what I mean. Great to hear that you're into the classics as well - and I've seen some of your nice Baden stuff already!
Ludovico: Yes, isn't that what it's all about! (At least, it had better be, because I'm not going to be retiring on this any time soon...)

Welcome from a felow biologist (microbiologist, to be more precise). Based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Wales (Cymru) is the only country on the Bristish Islands ,that I've not visited so far. I'll come one day (it's very up on my list!), time, money and covid permiting. I hope that you'll enjoy yoour time here. There's a lot to be learned. By the way, I was in Baden, last July, visiting Freiburg and the Black Forest. Very nice!

Welcome from the other side of the island in sunny Suffolk Joe ( randomjoe). I guess when you said you were from the other place you're referring to the town I work in - wonderful Cambridge! Look forward to seeing some of your collection on here.
