Hi folks, thanks for adding me to your forum. I'm Tom from Cumbria UK.
I'm new to stamps and must confess to knowing very little, its going to be interesting for me. I like old stuff, motorbikes usually, but love the connection to the past and the people.
I have been given an ancient album by my father, from my German mothers side of the family, my poor mother has late stage dementia in a vegetative condition, so cannot help with info, my father knows little of the relative this album came from. I think he was a great great grandfather. (I may have the wrong number of greats in there)
There are many interesting stamps in the album collected from 1840 to 1890, that I have read a little about, one notable looks like a 1856 British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta!! Now before everyone yells at me, I know its going to be a fake, or forgery, but its still interesting why a relative from centuries ago would have a fake in his album. I mean he must have been long dead when fakes started appearing.
I have a couple of bad photos I took of the 1 Cent with my tablet if anyone is interested.
Tom

welcome Tomb to TSF Sorry to hear about your mothers condition, sadly something many have to experience (and perhaps someday even ourselves) It sounds like a wonderful gift (despite the probable forgery). When I was just beginning stamps it was common to receive from the Stamp companies offering approvals "facsimile" of rare stamps. In my childhood collection I came across a number of them and I think that maybe they were "free" gifts as well. Perhaps the main intention was so one could fill all the spaces in their albums?!? Anyway, welcome to the forum. A nice group of folks! Stan Northern California

Welcome to the group Tom ( Tomb), and thanks for posting the stamp pics. I'm no expert, but the print looks much too clear to be real sadly... As to the forum, please feel free to ask us anything you want - there's a lot of friendly people here!

René I did not think you rude Rene, I am old and thick skinned, and can speak straight to the point the same as you. I apologized because the photos were SO bad. I think you are right, a scanner is needed. I have taken some more photos with a slightly better camera. My ex wife left with, it seems, the good camera. I miss that camera.

TombLast pics were a little better but if you intend to post often, a scanner would do just better - I have an Epson V370 (cheap) but it works for me as I do not do any "high resolution" work - some members do have some great scans (better than mine) Since this is your Intro thread, I took the liberty to chat a bit !! Ok Rene, My father has informed me he has a scanner and I will do as advised - once this Covid 19 Lockdown is lifted in UK.
Thanks for being persistent pushing me the right way, I do appreciate the advice.

Welcome! If I need real detail I get better results from my camera than my scanner. The Macro setting on my old camera was better than anything I have seen scanned, you could zoom in and see the paper grain. Clearly the thing to do is both Scan and Photograph, unfortunately this will take some time, my next time off work is Sunday so I will look into the camera side, unless I can get photos at work tomorrow. Many thanks to all for the warm welcome and advice. Watch this space. Admin should I start a new thread for this one stamp? Tom

Tomb........Welcome to the forum. Cumbria is beautiful and one of things I miss about England. Yes you should or you could add it to an existing one. As this is obviously a forgery/reproduction you will find a thread in the Cinderella section or go to British Guiana and start a thread there. Posts made in the Introduction thread or the 'Whatcha been Stamping?' thread will disappear over time so best not to post pictures or start discussions there. Look at threads already existing, you will likely find one suitable. Have fun Londonbus1

ok - the comments about cameras vs. scanners got me thinking... My scanner tops out at 600 dpi (dots per inch), and I know others can go up to 2400 dpi... Now my 18 megapixel digital camera (Canon 60D) has an effective resolution of 5184 × 3456 pixels on a sensor of 22.3mm x 14.9mm. Combine that with my Tamron SP AF 90mm 1:1 macro lens, I can get a physical 1x image (e.g. real size as opposed to shrunken as with normal lenses). Working on 25.4mm per inch, this means I have an effective top dpi of: - 5184 / (22.3 / 25.4) =~ 5904.6 - 3456 / (14.9 / 25.4) =~ 5891.4 Wow... I didn't think it would be that high! Right - time to get out the tripod over the long weekend and try some pics I think!

I routinely scan at 3200 dpi. It will do 6400 but I haven't the patience to wait as it takes a l-o-n-g time. 3200 isn't bad
Epson Perfection V600 photo
and then I have my old Unitron dissecting scope with a 10 Mega-Pixal USB camera on it- quite detailed, but a small field/area
The biggest challenge was getting scans to resemble the same color my eyes would see. I started with a Canon Lide 300, but it had problems with some colors and I tried for a while "tricking it" using different color backgrounds... but that became a pain in the backside, so I ordered the Epson and an extra background which I painted matte black and now black suits most and if I need white it's literally seconds to change
I use optical aides a lot as my near vision has gotten worse with time

Hi, Tom ( Tomb) and welcome to TSF! I am sorry to be late to the party in welcoming you aboard. I am from the US, but currently living in the UK, in Oxford. I already appreciate that you have posted photos of what appears to be a facsimile of the rarest stamp in the world, but as a classics collector myself, I would love to see images of the other stamps in that old album. Again, welcome! -Chris ( Beryllium Guy)

Thanks again folks. Cinderella Section? I'm learning, I didn't know what that was but am learning. Sorry to be such a newbie but I have suddenly become a stamp collection owner.
I will hopefully take some more photos of the rest of the album, and hopefully scan (Rene) in time. I have been noting what some of you guys collect so will start there as they will be of interest.
