I recently started collecting covers from U.S. Navy ships. It started when I was doing an eBay search for covers from my hometown of Wilkes-Barre and a cover from the USS Wilkes-Barre showed up. I got it, and then I wondered if any other ships were named after local place names. I found some USS Pennsylvania covers as well as covers from other ships. I used this research and the covers to produce a PowerPoint presentation, titled USS Local, for my stamp club. I then started some other collections of ship covers.

A recent cover purchase, Point Barrow 1949 Resupply Expedition. What caught my eye was the two different ships: The USS Burton Island origination postmark addressed to the Lieutenant Commander of the USS Valley Forge, an aircraft carrier. Seems the Lt. Commander was hospitalized at the time of receipt and was forwarded to him at the San Diego Naval Hospital, thus the two postmarks.

I joined the Universal Ship Cancellation Society to further my interest in naval covers. I started with their free offer and then signed up.
This is from their Facebook page:

For now though, the focus is on U.S. Navy Ship covers and specifically those that served or had involvement with Operation Deep Freeze which had its beginnings with the preparation for International Geophysical Year (1957-1958).
Cancelled Jan 14, 1955 and marks the vessel's arrival at the Antarctic continent
Additional ships from both the US Navy & Coast Guard would take part over the coming years in Operation Deep Freeze as seen in the listing below.
OPERATION DEEP FREEZE
US Navy • USS Wyandot (AKA-92), freighter • USS ATKA (AGB-3), freighter • USS Arneb (AKA-56), freighter • USS Burton Island (AGB-1), ice breaker • USS Edisto (AGB-2), ice breaker • USS Glacier (AGB-4), ice breaker • USS Mills (DER-383), destroyer US Coast Guard • USCGC Eastwind (WAGB-279), ice breaker • USCGC Edisto (WAGB-284), ice breaker (see USS Edisto) • USCGC Glacier (WAGB-4), ice breaker (see USS Glacier) • USCGC Southwind (WAGB-280), ice breaker • USCGC Staten Island (WAGB-278), ice breaker • USCGC Burton Island (WAGB-283), ice breaker (see USS Burton Island)
Complete list? These are the ship cancels and covers currently known and may not be all inclusive.
If anyone is aware of other ships or vessels involvement with International Geophysical Year or Operation Deep Freeze, please do share...
Happy collecting!

As I work on the Polar Exploration pages (1955-1975), here are a few for the USA Operation Deep Freeze '66.
Feedback and/or suggestions for improvement are most welcome...

stanley64 - Just a comment that I liked your inclusion of the service sector the ships were assigned to. I had not thought of doing that on my pages.

Thanks for the feedback and sharing your own pages JeffS; much appreciated! Subsequently, I have modified the title to read "Polar Exploration: Land of Ice & Snow" and will consider reducing the current font size to allow for additional text related to the postal markings e.g. duplex cancel, slogan cancel, etc.
There are many ways to collect ship covers, missions, dates or even specific vessels and their commissions. Even within the my own collecting criteria, there is plenty of material available, albeit philatelic in nature. Which is why, the posts containing actual covers or mailings (ship-to-shore) should catch the eye of the observant and be appreciated by the many ;-) Again, thanks for sharing!
I now have a few more things to keep on the lookout for...
Happy collecting!

Not a 100% true Ship Cover but if it is USS NJ (any of the 3) it belongs in my book

A local named ship. Returned to Camden on the day it was decommissioned. It was also built at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden NJ (It was never in NY) so it returned to its home. It was also the last Navy Ship ordered from NYSC.

One of the last 2 sailing ships still used by the US government. USCGC Eagle is used by the US Coast Guard to train cadets at the academy.
