There are plenty of errors in the world of philately that come from the printing or production processes and the output of each is strictly controlled by the postal authorities in order to spot and correct any issues before they reach the public's eye. Nevertheless, oversights and errors do occur.
This thread is to highlight those indicia errors that have occur as part of the postage cancelling process and have become themselves, part of postal history as in this example,
Canada's Imperial Penny Postage (Plate 2A, Position 49) with "ST. CATHERINE ST. WEST/MONTREAL / JA 26 99" c.d.s., albeit with the 4:00 PM time mark upside down.
Happy collecting!

Inserting date slugs into manual handstamps always provides room for error , inversions and omissions . However the most spectacular one I have found occurred in Apia Western Samoa for a month or so in August 1994 Used here as a backstamp arrival mark on a cover from the Cook Islands , the clerk forgot to set the country name in mirror order. " AOMAS .W" lasted for several weeks . Incidentally he got the time and Year in reversed placement, and even got the time upside down . The day and month are OK and I have to hope that APIA is in the right order . Normally the place names would not be changed when setting the date, I think he must have dropped the handstamp half assembled and the letters fell out ?

Ok Vince, stanley64 , you asked to see some more ................................... APIA SAMOA 1886 -1895 Later type a simple hand stamp with interchangeable Date slug and Month slug, Simple ? Not much to go wrong? You would imagine so OOPs he forgot the date slug NOV the what ? 90% of the dates are MONTH /over DATE but it is quite often DATE /over MONTH oh dear he got the date "5 " upside down Getting the number upside down can create an impossible date eg the " 61st of January "

Continuing with Samoa Some times both Month and date are inverted relative to the town name. I don't know how he managed this one but we have two different MONTH slugs

Inserting date slugs into manual handstamps always provides room for error , inversions and omissions . and Canada's Squared Circle hammers are no exception; here is another example,
Canada's Imperial Penny Postage with "GODERICH / JA 30|9" Squared Circle cancel., note the single digit for the year '99' (ERD of Error - 03 JAN 1899, i.e. "JA 3|9")
Happy collecting!

Just scanned this cover for discussion by our Samoa Group and noticed two indicia errors from two different countries ! How's that for coincidence / Carelessness ? Little Samoa and big USA each got the year slug wrong The Samoa should be "99" not "66" as the stamps were issued in 1895 and the USA arrival mark very faint so it is hard to read cannot be " FEB 18 6681" ! /

... and the USA arrival mark very faint so it is hard to read cannot be " FEB 18 6681" ! ... I believe the piece arrived in San Francisco on February 8, 1899, rather than on the 18th.

Yes Steve tomiseksj the 8th it is ! I now see the CAL which indicates the handling,+ an additional US 8c stamp (5c postage + 3c for registration across the US ) as the Samoa stamps only paid as far as San Francisco. This is a transit mark rather than an arrival at destination Allowing for the fact we are not in the 7th Millennium and Back to the Future at "6681" It took 14 days to cross an ocean but there is no indication when it reached Camden N.Y.

This time relative to the wavy line obliterator, the date is correct ...it is the name of the mail centre for Aberdeen that is inverted ..... too much early Christmas spirit?
