Bought this today from an auction house with loads of other stuff (picking up tomorrow) but is it unusual to have three different countries stamps on an envelope?? (USA, Ceylon and New South Wales?)

None of the 3 stamps appear tied to paper by a cancel mark, even though 2 (US and Ceylon) have cancels that clearly should be continuing off the stamp.

Also, the 5c Jefferson was not issued imperforate and I am not aware of any imperforate errors. Your pic isn't sharp enough, but it looks imperforate. The margins are too big, it's not the essay version of the stamp, and it wasn't issued as postal stationery/card. You can put a big mental ? next to it -- what exactly is it, because it doesn't appear to be the original postage stamp nor the subsequent paper/grill varieties.
The Ceylon stamp appears to have trimmed perfs. The NSW stamp has a huge left margin, but I'm not familiar with the plate layout for that issue.

A 5-figure cover if it was real. But it's not.

Yes a pretty confection I am afraid. Someone has been playing games sticking three less than perfect used stamps on an envelope which may or may not have gone through the post previously . Perhaps with a different stamp underneath these three. It may have once been a legitimate cover from England to Hong Kong Look at the geography. addressed to Hong Kong , so where did it start ? Via Marseilles is impossible from New South Wales or from Ceylon. Via Marseilles is an English routing to the Orient to save a few days sailing time, mail would go by train to Marseilles to pick up a ship to Alexandria then on by the Red Sea to the East , faster that way than sailing round Africa or even on a British ship round Spain and Gibraltar .

It's certainly a collectible oddity.
Over the years, I've enjoyed seeing dealer contrived/manufactured covers that had different country stamps and different country postmarks on a single cover. All the stamps (and sometimes the original cover) were real, but the "foreign" stamps were added on afterwards and the postmarks were all fake. They weren't intended to defraud. Every once in a while, you meet a dealer who likes to have a little light-hearted fun.

Wow with 83 albums and several boxes you are in for a few weeks of fun! . I am Isolated in the north of Scotland and auction houses with such stuff are all a distance away and the opportunity for such purchases are few and far between.
Have fun and good luck with the treasure hunt , sorry to be one of those to disappoint you on the merits of your cover , not valuable but fun nonetheless.

ladydoe, If you aren't a collector, what do you do with the "stuff" once you've finished going through it?

Isn't that Washington on the 5c one, not Jefferson?

OMG! You're right. I had to magnify the daylights out of it and find another through a search to verify. LOL. Time for an eyeball check.
