What I collect: United States, famous people

My name is Brian, I live in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, near the Canadian border. I started collecting stamps back in March when the pandemic hit and I couldn't leave my house. I was looking for something I could do that didn't involve my phone or the TV. I was hoping my 12 and 10 year old boys would get interested too, but so far not much luck. When I started, I thought I'd be interested in stamps with famous people on them. I enjoy history and I thought I could learn about some of the people on stamps. I discovered that I am also interested in many other kinds of stamps. I really like the colors and artwork of the early 20th century US. And some of the space themed stamps are really cool. I've got an album that I'm collecting used US stamps in. I'm creating an album with famous people. I'm still in the organizing stage, trying to determine how I want to organize the album of people. I just decided that I'd like to also look at space and Star Trek themed stamps. So, several different areas of interest. I'm having a lot of fun with it and I'm really enjoying the non-digital nature of stamp collecting. It's very calming.

Hello, Brian ( bcuddy) and welcome to TSF! Greetings from an American living in the UK.... Glad to hear that stamp collecting has been a positive, relaxing aspect of your life, especially during the stressful times of the lockdown. In that regard, you are not alone in your experience. It works that way for many of us. See you around the boards! -Chris ( Beryllium Guy)

Any famous people in particular you are interested in? Not really. Mostly interested in people that I'm not already familiar with so I can learn about them. Inventors, explorers and musicians. Some former presidents that I don't know too much about (i.e. NOT Washington or Lincoln). But really anyone I can look at and say "What did this person do to warrant being put on a stamp"?

Welcome! Besides collecting stamps per se, you can explore affixing such stamps onto concordant (not identical image) postcards, to create maxicards. Or onto envelopes, where you can add a concordant cachet of your choice.

Welcome to TSF bcuddy ! You might be one of those rare few for which the year 2020 will be remembered in a good way !! Great you have started collecting as there is no better hobby. I started collecting by chance, being in the 'right' place at the right time, back in 1990. A year I will always remember just for that. I hope it will be like that for you too. I'd be interested to know how you got started during the pandemic........just by chance ? Picked up an old album ? Anyway, have fun and Happy Collecting. Londonbus1

I'd be interested to know how you got started during the pandemic........just by chance ? Picked up an old album ? Thanks for the welcome. Like everyone else, I was pretty much stuck at home. I suffer from depression anyways and I was spending my days watching TV, playing on my phone, reading the news and my depression was getting worse. I decided I needed a hobby that didn't involve electronics. I happened to see the Arnold Palmer and George Bush stamps that the USPS has out. That put the idea in my head. I ordered a "starter kit" from a hobby website and away I went.

Brian, welcome to our Forum! I apologize for the delay in offering my welcome -- I did manage to get your status changed once I saw your intro but I didn't have the time to respond. If you have questions or encounter problems, please message me or one of the other moderators and we'll try to help. There is a lot of good information posted in the many threads here but don't neglect the Newsletters as there is much in them as well.
